Happy 2016. I enjoyed my first day of the new year and while I was relaxing, I began to wonder about something that has been swirling-around in my booze-clouded mind: I really don't get this two-step dance that feminists seem to do amid their "consent is sexy" spiel and their gratuitous repeating of the word "consent" every 65 seconds as if it's an alien concept that nobody ever heard about before.

For the record, and to be brutally honest, I should say that I have never required a feminist to tell me about consent. When I lost my virginity, I made absolutely without-a-doubt certain that my girlfriend wanted it. I wanted the whole thing to be genuine and above-board. That meant me applying no pressure. Doing nothing that she felt uncomfortable with. Like, I didn't threaten to dump her if she didn't feel like putting-out and I didn't ply her with booze and I didn't make her do anything she didn't want to do. And, what's more, I didn't think I was particularly special for doing it that way either.

Really, it wasn't transgressive of me. At all. I wasn't violating all the pro-rape rapeyness of rape culture that all men are supposedly programmed with. So, yeah, I have always wanted to get sexual consent and I have never NEEDED a feminist to lecture me about consent from their all-knowing perch of moral superiority.

I know they simply adore talking-down to all of us stupid fucking meatheads, because we certainly don't know the meaning of well-known words, but it was wholly unnecessary in my case for whatever reason. I knew about consent in the complete absence of feminist fulminating about it. Maybe I'm a weirdo. Anyway, here's what I truly don't get:

  1. We hear "Consent is sexy" all over the place. "Consent is sexy". "Consent is sexy". Yes means yes. Get consent. Get consent. Consent. Consent. Consent. Consent. Consent. Consent. Consent. Get consent. Consent is sexy. It's very sexy getting consent. So get consent. Okay.

  2. When a man takes the first step towards getting consent-- by talking to a woman-- the feminists start to act as if he is an absolute monster for even thinking about trying.

"Don't talk to me! You're not entitled to my time! Don't you dare ask me for coffee an in elevator! Stop looking at me, you meathead!" Such a man is an absolute beast because he may have been trying to get consent.

So how the hell is someone supposed to get consent, then? Don't you think feminists would have a more positive attitude towards a man who is trying to get consent? If it is sexy, why do they love dumping on men who try to do it?

I really don't get it. What is this game they're playing? Proclaim "consent is sexy" all over the place, and when a man so much as clears his throat before talking to the woman sitting next to him on the train, he is perpetuating rape culture and treating all women like meat. And if a man fails to get consent after an evening of dashing repartee with a woman who then says "sorry, I'm not interested", they love to point and laugh at the dumb schmuck who foolishly thought he should try to get consent.

"You wanted to get consent! BWAHAHAHAHA! Go home and masturbate, you pathetic idiot!"

I really don't get this thing that they do. Is this how they amuse themselves? Is this part of the appeal of their "consent is sexy" slogan?

How about this: I say "Don't drink and drive" all over the place and, when someone volunteers to be the designated driver for his friends at a party, I call him a stupid turd. And when he says "But I'm not drinking and driving. I thought that was the right thing to do?" I sarcastically scream "YOU WANT A FUCKING COOKIE?!" Does that make sense to anyone? This lousy attitude towards consent-seeking which simultaneously coexists alongside the declaration that it is the only correct thing to do?
