If it's true, it's terrible and I feel sorry for her because nobody deserves that.

If it's fake, it's disgusting and I feel repulsed that a person could cheapen the trauma of actual victims, and soil a (albeit, fictional - but it colours people's opinions others nonetheless) man's name.

The problem is people don't approach telling of adverse situations objectively. On one hand, you have a group of people who automatically, militantly, take sides. All without considering why the evidence and connections that they see (or not see) may lead them to such a conclusion. And on the other hand, you have a group of people that believe in the universal virtue of honesty without a second thought, also without considering the evidence and connections that may or may not have influenced their or others' decision.

The only real appropriate response to posts such as the one in question is to dismiss them. It is not our place to decide the outcome in any criminal or civil case, or the authenticity of a first hand account of such an event from where we (Reddit users) stand. Such things can only be decided in a court of law, and should be dismissed as irrelevant in this theater. We just can't know. Until people understand this, we will always have these incidents.

thanks for this. I'm skeptical of course, given the evidence, but it's good that we're not jumping to conclusions. There is still the very real possibility that she was assaulted, although judging by the evidence it seems unlikely.

Mistake #2 - Reposting to a larger subreddit.

Mistake #3 - Politicizing her own (alleged) victimization.

Having said all that, if she was making it up, why would she relate the store as an attempted rape and not just make up a completed rape? I have no idea whether she's for real or not. I do not trust armchair detectives; I've been accused of being a troll or sockpuppet myself too many times by people who think they're cleverer than they actually are. Reddit is not a court of law; she's not fingering any individual man; I think giving her the support she's asking for as if she were a victim doesn't do any harm in this context. If she is making it up to make some kind of rape activist point, the horribly misogynistic comments are just going to reinforce her idea that men are terrible rape-inclined monsters, and if she wasn't, they're just flat out cruel. Even if you don't care anything about her, if you care about mensrights, that should be enough to make you pause-- any time anyone doubts any rape claim anywhere on reddit, insults to /r/mr aren't far behind. Skepticism is one thing, but telling her she's a fucking cunt who deserves to be raped again? There's no excuse for that.

We don't do any favors for the cause of false rape claims by convicting someone of false claims in the court of reddit.

Every time a woman lies about being raped, the argument "women never lie about rape" (choose one):

a) remains just as strong. This incident doesn't count for some reason. b) retains most of its credibility. This is the sole exception to the rule. c) is shown to be ridiculous. Again.

Is it just me or in the picture that was provided the wound is on the left side of her face, while in the video that was provided the wound is on the right side of her face, and the left side of her face looks unharmed.
