IF it is vulgar, cold, icy stare. Don't let them visibly rile you, even if you're terrified. That is part of their game, to throw you off balance, to make you FEEL vulnerable.

Honestly, I find the "Sorry, I'm not interested." more effective than "Sorry, I'm taken." Granted, I'm not married so I don't have the big guns (read: ring) to pull out. For ladies who aren't married, I find many men to take the "I'm taken." as a challenge. Perhaps just a glut of women who hide behind that to be rid of "creepers", and who later hook up with the hot guy at the bar... right in front of the "creeper". Makes many, many men not believe that you're taken, and feel they just have to keep trying.

Always polite, but firm if you're uncomfortable.

It is perfectly acceptable as long as they back down once you show you are taken. If not, tase them.

Should I change my response, and if there ever IS the vulgar variety, what response do I give?

"I appreciate the compliment but there is no need to be rude. Thank you anyway, but I am taken." BIG SMILE as you walk away, chin up.

Remember, this is a shit test of sorts so you have to maintain frame and shrug it off, without being a cunt about it.

99.9% of catcalling is harmless. If the 0.1% comes at you, you're screwed, just as you would be if you were being mugged or attacked in any way.

Just keep walking. If they're being extra nice about it, smile and just keep walking.

I always play deaf to vulgar cat-calls because they honestly scare me. Someone is deliberately trying to embarrass or demean while all I'm trying to do is run errands.

I once had a guy call me over while I was walking my dog to ask directions, and he pulled out his penis. I quickly walked away and crossed the street and he followed me, but I just fled. It's something that has always really bothered me. But like many have said, with vulgar-aggressive cat callers, you don't know what these people are capable of if you amp up aggression they might follow suit.

With normal compliments I'll usually say 'thank you' or laugh/smile. However I must say, my past experiences with vulgar cat calls have made me slightly more defensive than normal, as I'm always worried about it degrading into something worse, so I'll honestly do my best to not engage.

I think it's rude to just completely not acknowledge someone when they are paying you a compliment. I give a sincere thank you but keep walking. Usually I don't get hunted down after I've already acknowledged them and continued walking, but if they do I just say I'm married. I don't think clutching my pearls over it is really doing anything to defend my husband.

When they call you sunshine or the catcall is otherwise polite, it's fine to smile, acknowledge them and then show you're taken, as you have been. They won't be offended by that and it'll get the message across.

Yep! When the cat call is vulgar, I generally just ignore it or somehow shy away from it, like pretending not to hear - I haven't given it much thought until now, but it's just it's been my natural reaction for years and it's worked. It's hard to think of a good response when someone yells from a distance about how 'your ass is from grad school,' even if it is a compliment. So just let it roll off you like water off a raincoat, and stroll on by.
