I am a 20 year old college student, currently getting a degree in computer science. She has only paid for one semester for my college. I work and pay rent to my dad for living with him so I would like to believe I am relatively independent.

I love programming and went into the degree because I believe I would be able to stay home with my future children and also work on some freelance projects, creating a perfect balance where I would be with my family and have time to take care of them while also earning a penny or two.

I have only had 2 relationships, one that lasted 3 years, and my current relationship to the most wonderful and sweetest guy ever. I like it this way, I love long term relationships and I believe that's how it should be. If you decide to date someone you should try to make it last for as long as possible.

However, my mother does not, she does not understand why I would want to be in a long term and loving relationship. We frequently get into fights because she believes I am wasting my youth and that it is unforgivable. She believes that I should date and sleep around, which I have no interest in. I would rather date one man and hopefully marry him later.

This difference frequently leads to arguments were she ends up calling me names and telling me I need psychological help.

The fact that I want to be a stay at home mom when I have kids eventually is also a sore topic between us because she believes that a woman should work and that my dreams are insane and unrealistic.

She is a strong and independent business woman, who runs her own business, has immigrated to the USA and was even able to earn a masters along the way.

Has anyone had a problem like this before? How did you get your family to understand or accept your decision? Am I just crazy for thinking this way?
