Does Hypergamy Exist? Yes. Is its power vastly overstated on this forum? Also yes

A common example we get is the dating app data. On hinge, 10 percent of the male profiles get 60 percent of the matches. On tinder, 20 percent get 80 percent of the swipes.

Why this is misleading

While this is correct, we forget a very important 2 very important facts with dating apps.

Fact Number 1 - Roughly 80 percent of the user base is male

There has been various data points on this, but for the vast majority of all dating apps, the user base is between 70-90 percent male. This means that, even if women were completely monogamous and matched with only a single male, more than 60 percent of male users would be left without a match. If youre not in the top 20 percent and have gotten laid from apps before, be happy that this isnt the case (or youd be fucked)

Fact Number 2 - Swipe based apps favor the top x%

What do I mean by this? Lets assume I am a woman using an app for a second. Lets say I go onto tinder. I swipe through 100 profiles, which is a lot for a girl, being that we guys generally swipe right on 50 percent of the profiles we see (and some swipe right on all). That means she'll have at least 50 matches after 100 swipes. Little does she know, shes only being shown the top profiles. Why is she only being showed the top profiles? Because of the tinder ELO system. Sure, they claimed to have changed it, but we all know that is bullshit based on field report after field report of swipe results.

As a guy, you need to get this through your head - If you arent a top 20 percent guy, you arent even being shown without a boost after your initial noob boost

Now, you may ask, SabanMiles, how do we test this hypothesis. Well, back in the day, I did test it. You can no longer do it (you can try, but you'll get shadow-banned or outright banned after tinder picks up an abnormal change in swipe differential after changing pictures).

I called it "The Model Switch"

How to do it? Take an instagram model. Let tinder sit for a few days. A ton of women will swipe right and your ELO score will build up. After that, buy the premium service. Left swipe on all your matches to A. Increase your ELO score even more (A left swipe is like beating someone in a game if they right swiped on you) and B. Test the hypothesis accurately to get an accurate match count. Then replace the model photos with your own photos

The Results

Needless to say, the results are pretty staggering. The amount of right swipes I used to receive after doing this was larger than any amount of boost I ever paid for, by a long shot. And it would last for a week or so. We are talking hundreds of more matches than I would usually get

What the results mean

Basically, its not that women are swiping left on your profile per say. A lot still will swipe left, but its a deeper issue than that. They literally arent being shown your profile

I recently made a post on obesity and ran an experiment documenting online dating in different countries. I left those accounts up for a week. I went back on just to see what was happening. I had hundreds of right swipes in Ukraine and the Philippines. Being that I had so many right swipes, I chose to be extra picky when matching. I didnt even realize I was doing this at first. But I had so many damn matches. I couldn't talk to all of them. So I only right swiped on maybe 50 of the hundreds of women that swiped right on me. Lets assume that I had 300 right swipes (I dont remember the exact number, it was likely more than that). 50/300 = .1667.... I naturally chose the pareto distrubtion when given abundant choice.

Whats the point of this post

Dont get down on yourself if you arent matching with hundreds of women on dating apps. The demographics (80 percent of the user base being male) shows that the odds are against you, even if everyone paired off 1 to 1. Further, it shows that most women still dont use dating apps, especially the attractive ones (why would they?). If they did, It would be closer to a 50-50 split. Further, abundant choice leads to a pareto like distribution even for males if they were given abundant choice. I believe it has less to do with "Hypergamy" and more to do with abundance of choice on the apps.

Women are hypergamous, but only relatively. You just need to be seen as better or equal to her. You dont need to be 6ft and 220 lbs of muscle with a chiseled jaw line. If shes 5 ft tall and 110 lbs, a guy who is 5'7 and 160 lbs of muscle is "equal or better" in her eyes from a physical standpoint

Social circle, day game, and night game are still the optimal way to meet women over apps for the vast majority of men. You can use the apps, but youre much better off letting them run in the background and meeting most women in real life
