It all comes down to how you define power. As Warren Farrell says, power is the ability to decide how you wish to live. Women have a lot more of this. Not just a bit, but a whole lot.

As for political power, how often do you care about that in your every day life and how much does it affect your ambitions? Besides, women have more political power than men alone from being the majority of the electorate. Men are literally a minority.

"Patriarchy" in the sense used by feminists implies women hold no power simply because they do not hold majority positions in spots seen as positions of power (government, military, corporate boards, etc.). Women hold less than 25% of positions in several government bodies, but they have never been more powerful.

There seems to be a disconnect.

I wish feminism would understand that patriarchies are a real defined societal structure, and that you cannot simply call any little thing a patriarchy.

Historically the only difference between patriarchy and matriarchy came down to just a few things; who moved in with who, who kept children in the event of a divorce, who was the head of house, and who was the head of the tribe. That's about it, in both women held the roll of homemaker while men held the roll of hunter/breadwinner.

So, given reality, most Western nations are actually closer to matriarchy. 91% of home purchases are decided by women, so it might as well be her home (but he gets to pay for it now); in the event of a birth outside of marriage, or in a divorce, she will get the children (now with child support); women are generally the head of house as well (let you ask your wife indeed)... the only facet missing is a female president/prime minister/etc. (wait, no, not all of them!).

So, we're pretty close to the edge of a super-matriarchy wherein everything feminists falsely claim about patriarchy come to fruition... even though it never really existed.

When women have the same opportunities as men, there is in my opinion no patriarchy. I live in England, we had a female PM that we had for a very long time and we have our second "ruling" queen for a hell of a long time. It really just doesn't get any higher than that.

None of this is brilliant or even a critique. You abstract so hard by spending 200 words defining patriarchy and still whiff completely on the fact that in real life the fundamental issue is that men wildly disproportionately are "in charge."

I don't get how this is so difficult of a concept to understand unless you're being intentionally obtuse, which I suspect a large portion of you are.

Oh and for what it's worth it's extremely easy to compare historical societies' relative levels of patriarchalism: contrast their ratio of men:women in government to 1:1. Math is hard.
