I know many of you have been burned, and I've read your stories with a tear in my eye. As a result, I've also become very concerned. I'm Australian in my early 30s. I've invested many years in my education and am about to start a good career with good income. My biological clock is ticking, and I'd love to be a dad.
What do I do? Do I risk my current freedom and happiness on finding a partner and having a family, knowing that even if I select a good woman, she might turn nasty in 10-15 years? Do I deselect myself from the gene pool and have a shallow relationship with a string of girlfriends?
I'm a decent, honourable guy. I like the idea of having a partner for life, having kids, being responsible, and working hard. I do NOT shirk responsibility. However, I do NOT like the idea of "marriage". I am an atheist and don't need church or government permission to share my life with someone. I don't fear a failed relationship for financial reasons as I'd pay the kids everything anyway. I couldn't live with myself if I neglected them. I fear my future partner turning nasty, corrupting the kids, being endlessly antagonistic, and ultimately denying me access to them, if we split up... despite me trying to make sure I find the right match for me who is least likely to do this. That would destroy me. I also fear my own legal system acting against me, despite being a good guy with a desire to do everything for his future kids' well-being.
I am not naive. I know things can go bad. I think I need to be looking for a woman of average looks (I'm ok, but overweight... losing it though... 35kg/70+lbs lost, not much more to go), who is an atheist, rational (not prone to psychotic outbursts!), smart, and has similar goals and values to me. I'd also make sure, as far as possible, that we stand a reasonable chance at long-term success before having kids. Did I miss anything?
So, my questions...
If you were my age with a reasonable prospects and a positive outlook on life, what advice would you give me? What could I do to maximise my chances of having a happy family life?
I'd appreciate any advice at all. I look around at my unhappy friends who married young, who envy my freedom. I don't mind giving up some freedom, but I want a good family life in return, not two decades of heartbreak.
Thanks :-)
TLDR: Early 30s Aussie guy wants partner and family. Doesn't know how to minimise risk of it all turning bad. Advice appreciated.
