tl;dr there is no reason you can't be an equity feminist and an MRA, but if you want to be a gender feminist you will have many contradictions you need to overcome to be an MRA.

Nobody really says you can't. i mean it's not like there's a club membership with dues and rules. (And if there is i never paid mine so nyah nyah)

The fact is though, a lot of the times feminist political organizations (like NOW) will get in the way of Men's rights goals. (like, for example, NOW throwing their weight behind defeating regulations that would make shared custody the default setting in divorce settlements... pretty much every time it comes up)

Most MRAs, if they were forced to admit it, probably wouldn't have a problem with the average feminist like yourself. However, a lot of us are sick of feminist lobby groups getting away with distorting reality.

While you may personally support equal rights for men, the majority of active feminists vehemently oppose equality.

After seeing all the injustices inflicted on men in the name of feminism, and being treated to the vicious attacks from feminists that men's rights activists routinely receive, most of us have learned that feminism is the enemy of men.

You can, but feminism has become identified so strongly with gender feminism that it just creates confusion and too much explaination.

It like wearing a shirt with a swastika but a traditional east asian swastika and not the Nazi swastika. You'll get so many angry people and comments it's better to just ditch the baggage of the swastika and use something else.

(and I'm not equating feminism to naziism, it's honesty the best example I could think of for this situation)

There is nothing that is a requirement of feminism that is anti-MR, however there are views held by people who label themselves (and their thoughts) feminist that are anti-MR. This, of course, also applies in the other direction as well.

I suspect some people who have an aversion to the concept of feminism are those that have suffered at the hands of feminists or feminist ideas, or suffered at the hands of political brainwashing, and are reacting badly. Much in the same way that it happens in the other direction. When people feel attacked it can be hard to discern the difference between a feminist/MRA and feminism/MR as a whole.

There are some 'feminists' out there that give the movement a bad rep cause they are bat shit crazy, man-hating ladies. These 'difference feminists' have a holier than thou attitude and aren't fun to hang around. Sadly, I think this is the image that people have when thinking about what feminism is and they say, "fuck that!" and I say "fuck that!" along with them.

I'm for equal rights across the whole gender spectrum. You can be both feminist and male rights advocate too, the two ideologies don't have to exclude one another.

The feminist movement has fought against many men's issues and made them worse, has accepted people who advocate violence against men into it and is one of the worst sources of anti-male stereotypes (ie all men rape posters and through huge exaggerations of the domestic violence statistics). All this from a movement that is in favour of equality. In addition, feminist lies and misrepresentations about the situation regarding gender rights are a huge obstacle to men in getting many of their issues even acknowledged.
