In one of small countries in Europe, it might be Switzerland, men are required by law to take 2 month of for paternity leave. They're debating if 3rd month should be mandatory.

So, it's the issue with popular attitudes in American society. There are many such issues in our society. What the woman voiced is a popular attitude. What you can do is to show your kids when you have them, that it isn't so. That your bond to them is just as important.

To me it seems silly how bitter some guys seem to be on here. Hate doesn't accomplish anything. The most important thing is to understand each other and to understand where the so hated feminists are coming from, and try to change the cause, not the effect.

Not to be stereotypical, but men of my generation are great dads and have no stigma attached to doing whatever is necessary for their child. Women will lose out on the childcare front if they continue to take their duties as primary caregiver for granted. Men are starting to put forth extreme focus on parenting and it will only help further the cause.

Not defending your coworkers, but there's a difference between maternity leave and FMLA leave. Maternity leave is 6 weeks unpaid leave (I believe it's considered temporary disability) and is only extended to women because its only purpose is to allow the woman to recover physically and mentally from the delivery. So obviously the father couldn't take it because that doesn't biologically make sense.

FMLA leave is 12 weeks unpaid leave that can be used for any kind of family medical leave, such as hospitalization or bereavement, but is most commonly used for time off after the birth of a baby. This leave is extended to both men and women, but men are statistically less likely to take advantage of it for childbirth, often due to not knowing that they even have that option.

It's not clear from the context of your post which type of leave your coworker was referring to.

I've been an MRA for quite a while now, but this is an argument that is not worth having.

Women are almost all about feelings, and telling any woman that a man bonding with his newborn is as important as a woman bonding with hers attacks something so ingrained at this point that all you're going to do is make enemies.

I don't disagree with you, with the exception of mom breastfeeding, which takes precedence for purely physiological reasons.

Someday women might be more receptive towards father bonding being on the same level as mother bonding, but we've got decades before it's worth taking a stand on, IMHO.

I don't think she was just dismissing the bond between father and child, just point out that the bond between mother and child is different.

In Canada, women get 15 weeks of maternity leave and 36 weeks of paternity leave by law.

Men are allowed to use all or a portion of that 36 weeks of pat. leave but none of the mat. leave.

So....there is definitely a difference.

My son is 3 weeks old. I'm going to be a SAHD after the 10 weeks my wife gets between saved-up vacation time and temporary disability insurance.

It's not the same, man. it just isn't. The baby comes out of the mother. They were almost a single organism for 9 months. Her smell, the unique signature of her heartbeat... these are the things the baby is programmed to respond to. There is no perfect substitute for the milk her body makes, and no man-made delivery system that can match her breasts. My boy does NOT respond to me the way he does to his mother. Every day he responds to me more, and eventually, I've been assured, he'll respond to us equally and sometimes even prefer me - but in the first weeks there really is no substitute for mother. I'm not trying to crap on what you're saying, but we've got to stick with reality.

The real issue raised by the Yahoo CEO story is this - she's fuckin' rich. She can afford the best care, and if she doesn't want to undertake the time-consuming process of breastfeeding, she doesn't have to compromise her baby's health and development by feeding it with formula - she can afford the high price of donor milk from a reputable source. So anyone holding her up as an example of what the modern woman can do (have baby, take no maternity leave) is full of shit. The average couple has to make tough choices between what's good for the child and what they can afford, or what they can afford to give up in income. So, congratulations, Yahoo CEO lady, you've just shown us what you can do with determination, effort, and a gigantic motherfucking pile of money. Somebody build me a pair of nanotech hands so I can start the world's smallest slow clap.
