The woman was not attempting an abortion (if she was, she would have gone to an illegal abortion clinic), she was attempting suicide. The father is not mentioned (well, he is but not much) because he has no say in this woman's choice with regards to her own life. In fact, it seems he was the one who drove her to suicide according to this article.

Groups are defending her for a few reasons, partly because they don't think she is a criminal, it would send a worrying precedent in terms of prosecuting pregnant women who smoke, and I suppose some people probably think you should be allowed to abort a fetus at any point before birth.

Actually, the father is mentioned: Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry said Shuai wrote in a note to her former boyfriend saying she was "taking this baby," which he said proves her intent. He also pointed out that higher courts have upheld the murder charge.

I'm not interested in prosecuting anybody for attempted suicide under any circumstances - being willing to end your life is proof that you are (at least temporarily) insane. But if I were the father and I'd wanted the child, I'd be upset and I'd hope that my family and friends would be supportive and allow me to grieve.

This title was extremely misleading..you (OP) make it sound as if she ate poison solely to abort the fetus, when in fact she ate it in an attempted suicide.

The way I see it, when a woman has child is inside of her womb, it is part of said woman's body and can be removed, or aborted, accordingly. Once the child leaves the womb, it is an independent entity. As much as I wish I had a choice over whether my partner terminates a pregnancy, it is still their sole choice.
