i'm sorry, but this polling was done using one online source of 500 people over 3 days. this does not strike me as particularly rigorous, and thus needs the be expanded before i can give credence to this claim

And here are numerous studies that directly contradict that finding, each declaring that women are more charitable than men:

I think that, aside from the small sample size (500 people) and the limited timeframe study participants had to respond (three days in April), this study missed a key indicator which would provide more proof of which gender gives more to charity: who is the financial decision-maker in the family?

[From the Indiana University Study]

"...a female-headed household with a family income of at least $103,000 is likely to give to charities, on average, nearly $1,910, or $1,000 more a year than a similar household in which a man controls the checkbook."

[From the IZA study]

"More women than men act as primary or sole decision-maker when it comes to deciding how much to donate to charity (46% vs. 41%) and which charities to support (46% vs. 38%)"

Another point that the BiddingForGood survey you linked to didn't address is that, at least according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, women tend to donate their time more often then men.

"The volunteer rate of women increased from 29.3 percent to 29.9 percent in the year ending in September 2011, while the volunteer rate for men, at 23.5 percent, changed little. Women continued to volunteer at a higher rate than did men across all age groups, educational levels, and other major demographic characteristics."

And women volunteer more despite the other duties that they routinely perform, like childcare, running a household, caring for elderly parents and, y'know, working. Full-time female employees volunteer more than their male counterparts, and men who work part-time are less likely to volunteer than women who work part-time. This is according to a study from the University of Wisconsin, Men’s and Women’s Volunteering: Gender Differences in the Effects of Employment and Family Characteristics

So, given the wealth of evidence that suggests that women donate more both in terms of volunteer hours and monetary donations, I'm not sure this is a point you really want to argue.

I really don't like turning charity into a pissing contest. That being said, if it was the other way round, we would never hear the end of it. So I can live with it.

I know this is an old post, but I kind of wanted somewhere to admit something. So if anyone reads this, just know I don't expect any responses, and just wanted to say it to an audience interested in this sort of topic.

The other day a young boy came by asking if we needed the yard mowed. Normally, I'd be thrilled, I hate mowing. The yard didn't need mowed at that time. He said, during the conversation, he was trying to earn money for a school dance. I was conflicted. I understood it'd be good for him to do the work and appreciate the money, on the other hand he had only a few days to earn the money if he wanted to go (this was on a wednesday and the dance was on a friday, I learned this by suggesting I'd need it mowed on the weekend.)

We got to the point where I was pointing out property lines when I decided I didn't care if he learned the value of money from me. His parents can do that. I gave him the $20 he would have charged to mow, and told him to have fun. I feel it's important to show people, if you ask for help and take initiative to try and help yourself, people will be willing to help you.

The hug I got made my day, and only helped convince me more that one day I want kids. Pure gratitude for something so small, made me feel like a better person.

It would also be interesting to see what they donate to. I'd bet that women were much more likely to donate to female causes.

Oh god with the equivocation

'"We know from our work that it's not all about dollars but also about time spent and there are a significant number of women who volunteer on a regular basis instead of or in addition to making generous monetary contributions."'

Can't men ever in any way be the good sex? Do we always have to equivocate? Men give more to charity, so what? Why say 'well maybe women spend more time doing charity work' when you have done no research to present this thesis.

Hell if men are giving more to charity we sure as hell better imply that women volunteer more, sure the study does nothing to suggest this but can't have men being put in a good light ever.

Having done some gentle googling research women do appear to volunteer about 4% more than men, does that account for 10% more men giving to charity, who knows. Just didn't need the equivocation at all, may aswell have mentioned that women also care more about animal welfare than men. (which they do)
