I sent the author an email:

As a prominent member of the subreddit, Men's Rights, I appreciate your article regarding the recent SPLC Intelligence Report.

The sad part about labeling /r/MensRights (as it is called) is that it is merely a "subscription list". All subscribers merely have signed up to have the possibility of links posted to the subreddit to appear on their Reddit "front page". Many subscribers vocally oppose the ideas and links posted, and have simply signed up so that they can stay abreast of the topics they want to get involved in and argue against.

As a policy, the moderation team has always approached the subreddit as an "open forum", where nearly anything and nearly any point of view can be posted and discussed, under the assumption that American law supported the idea of "freedom of association". I do not feel that I should be labeled a member of a "hate group" simply because I discuss with and argue against people who have stated hateful things. And yet that is exactly what has happened.

Under this definition/criteria, the SPLC should also be listed as a hate group because they have associated and argued against people who have stated hateful things.

Anyways... Thanks for writing the article and giving a voice to those unfairly accused in this matter. I appreciate your efforts. If you would like to do further research on the /r/MensRights subreddit, I am available for discussion. If you would like to do more research on any of the other groups, I am sure Paul Elam of A Voice For Men and Pierce Harlan of The False Rape Society would take the time also.

Any good soul willing to explain to an ignorant European how much influence and visibility this SPLC thingy has in the US, exactly? I'd never heard the name before yesterday... I've just gotten a rough idea of what it is about, but that's it.

Wow. I didn't know that I am part of a hate group.

We even have t-shirts and decoder rings and secret handshakes that we employ while twisting our mustaches in a sinister way while plotting the overthrow of humanity.

But seriously. This is absurd.

I am a MRA. So I will tell you how I got inducted or recruited into this "hate group". I am a part of what is called Gen Y/Millenial age range.

Growing up I was taught that masculinity is bad, that maleness is a pathology in need of a cure. They tried to cure me, I guess. They certainly put me and most of our friends on various mood altering drugs to try and control our behavior. I don't even think it was all malicious either, but I do question the practice of drugging boys with ritalin and other drugs.

I was about 11 years old when I first realized that many women older than me and some my own age really had contempt and hate for boys and men. I will never forget getting kicked out of class one day. I was sitting in the hallway in a desk and I was right next to the teachers lounge. I heard them laughing and laughing about something that I had heard other teachers and girls giggling about that day.

See, I hadn't watched tv in a couple of days so I hadn't heard about this woman named Lorena Bobbit. Months ago young boys probably had a similiar experience as I did when they heard about Katherine Kiu and saw footage of Mrs. Osbourne stating that it was fabulous that she sexually mutilated a man.

Because I take issue with this I am some how part of the "hate group"??? This doesn't seem to make sense to me. I have literally never seen a MRA claim it was fabulous that a woman was sexually mutilated and I have been reading the sites that were listed as "hate group" sites for about two years now.

Anyways, back to my introduction to my induction to my "hate group".

Growing up I knew more boys, and girls, who saw their father for a few hours every other weekend than I knew of intact families. Infact I have gone from living with my grandma, to living with my mom, to living with my dad, to seeing my dad on weekends to seeing my dad for a few weeks out of the year during summer to seeing my mom every few months for a few months at a time during my childhood. I have seen how this effected me and I have seen how it effected my friends and now as a young adult I have seen how it effects children and men who are used as pawns in a money making racket called family court.

I like to call my generation the divorce generation. I think the next generation, considering that in 2007 40% of births were to single mothers by choice, will be called the single mother generation.

Single mother hood, not by divorce but female choice, wasn't exactly common when I was little but it wasn't taboo either. I remember one friend who would go into a rage if anyone used the word "bastard" around him. I remember how he expressed pain and heart ache at the fact that he never knew his father.

To keep this short and get to the point, several years ago I started thinking about these issues. I got depressed because my best friend had just shot himself. That is how I was inducted into this so called "hate group". I started asking myself questions about gender roles and what it means to be a man in todays world. I originally started from a feminist lens.

That is how I got my name. I got banned from so many feminist sites and called a troll so many times that when I found some of the sites listed as "hate groups" I thought they might ban me and if they did I would atleast get the being called a troll part out of the way.

It was quite a experience to say the least. I genuinely thought feminists would be receptive to what a man would have to say about masculinity and maleness and societies expectations of men and other male issues. Instead I got snark at best and rage at worst.

After my friend Brad killed himself, I tallied up the number of men and boys I had known in my personal life within 3 degrees of separation who had killed themselves starting from 16 up to the age I was then, 26.

I needed more than ten fingers to count that on. 28,000 men and boys committ suicide every single YEAR. That is more bodies than the number of people attending my state university. In two years time we have as many men dead from suicide as we had servicemen dead from combat in Vietnam. We have a memorial for Vietnam KIA. If I point out that civilian men kill themselves at higher rates than female veterans then I am apparently a misogynist and a member of a "hate group"?

I don't hate women. I don't like many types of women at certain times. I don't like that feminists and society cares more about spending money on sexual harassment seminars than stopping boys from killing themselves. This comment is getting long so I won't even mention the prison industrial complex, the sentencing disparities between genders, false rape allegations, mens lower life expectancy, circumcision and bodily autonomy of males, male rape, female on male rape, disparities in domestic violence when the victim is a male, how feminists and society see men as disposable and masculinity as inherently violent, the effects of war and selective service requirments on men, the education gap and so on and so on.

I wouldn't want to be spreading a "hateful" message. I especially wouldn't want to be accused of being a misogynist for disagreeing with or hurting a womans feelings.

Yes, it's quite a joke when the SPLC goes from fighting the Klan to calling guys who are concerned about things like the life expectancy and education gaps "misogynists." Really, even a liberal like myself can no longer take them seriously any more. Next thing you know, i will be accused of racism twice over - once for saying rap sucks, and again for saying country music sucks. Perhaps the writers at the SPLC should go to work for the Onion?

I just read this article and to my shock found SAVE {Stop Abusive Stop Abusive and Violent Environments) on the SPLC "Hate Group" List.

I'm in Australia but still know of & respect SAVE: a non-profit victim-advocacy organization working for evidence-based solutions to domestic violence. "We work to support all victims of intimate partner violence".

Clearly the SPLC list is a publicity fraud and agenda driven.

Time for some letters to their funding providers.
