Not to play the devil's advocate here, but isn't prison rape more of an American thing? Rape is worldwide, but the same can't exactly be said for prison rape.

Why does this so-called "fact" keep getting posted ad nauseum on /r/mensrights? I would love for this to be verifiable, but I've researched the claim myself and I've never been able to find one bit of credible evidence to support it. Calling it a "hate-fact" doesn't make it any more true. Honestly, using that kind of language just makes it sound like something a crazy radical feminist would say. Continually posting completely unsubstantiated bullshit like this doesn't help our cause in the least. It's so easy to feed the mis-information machine and generate hundreds of upvotes, but it just hurts out community in the long run. To the OP: If you are trying to make us look like a bunch of fringe nutjobs spouting nonsense, you are doing a good job. Next time, before you go on a tirade about something, why don't you check your sources?

keep in mind that human rights international says 140000, while "official" reported allegations are 2200. human rights international is known for exaggerating female rape. They may not be biased in favour of women but they may be biased in favour of making sure their rape tallies are not too low. One source of bias, as an uninformed guess, could easily be "do you know anyone that was raped last year?" If every prisoner says yes, it doesn't mean that every (other) prisoner was raped. They could all be referring to a single incident.

I welcome someone proving me wrong. What is that in terms of percentage of prisoner population. Is there more rape in some (or some type) of facilities? Some idea for how HRI comes up with their number.

We need to make a distinction about number of men raped in prison and number of rapes committed against men in prison.

This may seem like an insignificant quibble but the numbers look to be quite different.

Okay, I agree 110% that the rape of men is every bit as awful as the rape of women, and we should do everything we can to prevent rape in all forms. I know two men who were raped, so please don't think I'm trying to minimize the crime here. However, I'm having a difficult time with this claim.

Prison is a strictly monitored environment, so even though I'm sure very few report it, it makes sense that prison workers probably discover quite a few rapes in progress (though certainly not all of them). On the other hand, most male-on-female rapes occur in private residences. The police aren't likely to happen upon a rape in progress, and again, the victims usually don't report the crime. To say that more men are raped in prison than women are in the general population is a pretty outlandish claim when you think about it. Women are something like 51% of the population. Prison inmates are something like 1% of the U.S. population. The numbers just don't add up to me.

Edit: Well, I've learned my lesson. I thought I could politely bring up a minor disagreement I had about some statistics posted in r/MensRights without being immediately downvoted to hell. Clearly I overestimated you all.

Every rapist in prison was once in the general population, which kind of skews your statistics a bit. And since rapes in prison and in the general population are underreported, your analysis is hardly verifiable. I understand this is MR but try basing your propagandizing on the Fox News model. They're scum but at least they're good at it.
