Ah, censorship; the one sure-fire way to prove you can't win the argument on its merits.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I read it as the one sure fire way to know you were so right about something that a mod felt threatened and needed you to be gone so they can go back to "winning " without changes their obviously flawed views

Here's a quick rundown of r/feminisms mods' recent behavior:
Mods altering CSS of user's posts and comments.
Admins step in. This comment as well.
Polite discussion comments deleted en masse
Mods admit to deleting posts simply because posters are male

If he thought his arguments were strong enough, he wouldn't have had to xpost for support to /MensRights.

If you thought your arguments were strong enough, you wouldn't have to ban everyone that dares challenge them.
[+][deleted] -15 points-14 points-13 points 14 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link
We don't. We ban people who troll. Since /mr is an antifeminist reddit, xposting to /mr is considered trolling. There are currently 12 people banned. That number is actually very, very much smaller than the amount of trolls.
[–]numb3rb0y 18 points19 points20 points 14 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link
No, you claim to ban people who troll, but your definition of troll is essentially "anyone who disagrees with Donna_Juanita & co.", and when you don't ban, you simply delete comments or even edit their content using the stylesheets (or at least you did until kloo2yoo caught it and the admins told you off). Don't even try to deny this; everyone here has seen the multitude of submissions on /r/feminisms that amount to one or two pro-radical posts and ten times the number of [deleted] comments. Your authoritarianism under the guise of the "safe space" doctrine is well documented.
There's a reason you can post here, however abhorrent and sexist your views may be; we actually respect the freedom of speech because we know that ultimately, we're right, and we don't need to bully people because the facts bear that out. You, on the other hand, need to censor left and right because if people actually examined your views in the context of opposing criticisms, they'd fall apart.

Threads with a lot of comments deleted in them are the result of xposts to /MensRights. Even if every participant in /mr isn't a troll, a xpost to /mr is litterally a call for a troll invasion because /mr harbors an extreme amount of trolls.
The stylesheet issue was also an /mr drama party. One title of one post was edited to indicate that the thread had been deleted. It did lead to the creation of a new rule for moderators. But so has a lot of other incidents in the past. For example when your precious kloo deleted all mods in /equality 2 days after he was made a moderator. Kloo also uses sockpuppets to stalk people. Perhaps it's not so strange that /mr has so many trolls, when the first mod not only encourages but actively engages in such behavior himself?
[–]ether_reddit 7 points8 points9 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Even if every participant in /mr isn't a troll, a xpost to /mr is litterally a call for a troll invasion
No, it's a call for support. Cross-posting is well-accepted in reddit culture as a way of posting an item that is of interest to two separate groups.
because /mr harbors an extreme amount of trolls
You're using the term rather loosely. Some people post offensive and disrespectful content to MR. I've seen the same thing on the various fem* groups too. So deal with them individually, rather than painting everyone in a community with the same brush.
[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No, it's a call for support.
I don't care what you call it. I am describing the consequences. And to me it seems ironic to defend xposting from /mr to other reddits in the way you do here, considering that /mr regulars target many other reddits that were created for "support". r/ladybashing for example was trolled to smithereens when it was created by kloo and AnnArchist among others. "It's just a downvote squad" they screamed. And then they returned to their own squad.
Sidenote: too many downvotes now, the spam filter is preventing me from writing further replies. I have 3 comments written that I have to wait 10 mins each to post, so I think that'll be it for tonight.
[–]ENTP 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Wrong... You just consider anybody who disagrees with you to be a troll. I've seen it first hand.
[–]TheRadBaron 10 points11 points12 points 14 years ago* (14 children) | Copy Link
Since /mr is an antifeminist reddit, xposting to /mr is considered trolling.
Do you genuinely not know what the term "trolling" means?
You seem to genuinely believe "trolling" = "disagreeing with me" or "being wrong".
It's not. It's being deliberately and dishonestly provocative to get a negative reaction from people. Crossposting something controversial has plenty of problems and is a stupid way to go about things, but it's not "trolling".
Or maybe you do know what it means, and just find this to be an easier way to dismiss dissent.
[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points-2 points 14 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
People are not banned in /feminisms for participating in /mr. They are banned for inciting flame wars. Xposting to /mr is an example of that. Xposting links from /feminisms to /mr is being deliberately and dishonestly provocative. It's particularly obvious in some cases, where the title will read something like "Look at what this idiot feminist said".
What do you think happens when you post a link to reddit A from reddit B, when reddit B hates everyone in reddit A, and add an inflammatory title? Polite disagreements? Enlightening discussion? No, that's not what happens.
[–]A_Nihilist 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I've never trolled and never crossposted and I'm banned. Stop lying.
[–]TheRadBaron 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago* (10 children) | Copy Link
Xposting links from /feminisms to /mr is being deliberately...provacative.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no because it's just used as an example of "Hey here's what feminists actually discuss on their own".
...dishonestly provacative.
Nope. Where does the dishonesty come in at all? You don't need to use "troll" everywhere just because it's a fun new internet word that lets you dismiss people out of hand.
Oh, and when the majority of people in reddit A and B disagree with each other (I mean jesus christ do you still ban people for being male over there?), discussion will be frequently impolite and angry, but it is an opportunity for people to actually correct each other.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
We've never banned anyone for being male. I have explained that several times elsewhere.
Far as I'm concerned, flaming is trolling. However, I don't try to determine whether people are honestly insane or just pretending. It doesn't seem like we are talking about the same thing here. Maybe because you haven't actually seen what we regularly delete. To give you a sample, here are some comments that were recently deleted. These were all posted with in the past 24 hrs.
Even though we delete as much as we can of this type of crap, most feminists still prefer other venues than reddit, because they are more interested in intelligent conversation than mudslinging.
[–]TheRadBaron 5 points6 points7 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Far as I'm concerned, flaming is trolling.
You need to work on your vocabulary, then.
So is that a random section of time with every comment you deleted inside of it? Or is that just the particularly offensive comments you chose to prove some point that doesn't have much to do with our disagreement at all?
Because I've seen plenty of which comments can get deleted over there.
In any case, though, that's not really the issue. The issue is that you seem to think you get to personally redefine words at a whim.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I really don't care if we call it flaming or trolling so no need to get upset about that. The reddit /feminisms is for feminism-minded discussion, and I am simply illustrating that we deal with extreme amounts of comments every day that are directly opposed to that. Those were the majority of a comments deleted in the past 24 hrs some of which I deleted and some of which I would have deleted. There were some more that I did not investigate why they were deleted and would not discuss with you because it involves other mods.
[–]ether_reddit 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link
That's a lot of offensive comments. I'd click 'report' on any one of them, except the last. However, I don't see what any of this has to do with MR. Do you think it was members of the MR community who posted these things? It still has nothing to do with MR if those same people can post respectfully here.
I'm sorry that your subreddit attracts a lot of jerks. Ours does too. Welcome to the internet.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
A lot of them come from /mr yes. They guy who sent me a PM today saying he was going to rape me is an /mr regular. Trust me, I know there are a lot of "jerks" in /mr. That is in fact the big problem with /mr, that it fuels hate which spills over to other reddits. Let me give you two examples of this. A person will write something semi nasty in here, get upvoted for it. Then they will head over to a feminist or woman oriented reddit to "spread the message". When the message isn't well received, they will either 1) xpost to /mr to get support (i.e. call for a flood of hateful comments and votes and/or 2) start harassing the individual they were talking to.
The usual defense to this accusation is that "those are trolls" who don't represent the /mr community. But I have been here for years now. I know who is who. And every single time I have seen a feminists comment receive 10+ personal attacks and drop below -50 in vote score I have found a xpost to it in /mr.
No need to welcome me to the internet. I've been here for 15+ years. I've encountered my fair share of jerks. But I'm not sure I have ever seen such a vicious mob mentality before as the one in /mr.

As a rule in a Christian reddit that would make sense, if they were constantly being invaded by /atheism. I haven't been watching the relations between /atheism and religious reddits but I'm sure there are problems there as well. If you want to know which reddits are more guilty of xposting, all you have to do is check the stats.

if only there were a similar subreddit where people r/starcraft /r/mr and /r/feminisms could discuss.
There is /askafeminist. There has always been /equality. And a few other reddits. There are two problems tough. Most feminists are bored answering the same questions over and over again. And most antifeminists don't actually want answers.

Hey, Donna, now that we have you here...
There's something I've always wondered, and which I'm sure a lot of other people are wondering.
How come you hate men so much? What is the root of all that hate towards men you seem to be habouring?
This is a genuine question, I'm really curious what made you turn into such a man-hating person.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 14 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link
Oh the answer to that is pretty simple, and I'm sure you'll like it. I don't.
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 14 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link
You're a comoderator of the biggest sexist subreddit, which encourages misandry and censors and bans talk of gender equality. On that subreddit, you're most famous for defending censoring and banning men for being men.
You're the sole moderator of at least one sexist subreddit (I'm sure I've seen more, but I can't remember the names now) where you've even deleted a submission of mine because the gender was wrong.
Your posts frequently make it obvious that you have a deeply rooted hatred for men. If you don't even realise this yourself, then that is even more scary.
Do you honestly not believe that you hate men?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link
That was removed by the spam filter. I never saw it. Those reddits aren't sexist, and I don't hate men. I think you should probably get some help, you seem paranoid and frustrated.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 14 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link
/r/feminisms has been shown over and over again to support hate speech towards men, and frequently features articles and discussions that clearly show that the moderators there do not believe that men are human beings. You are part of that.
OTOH, you seem Reddit is out to get women. Who exactly is paranoid and frustrated?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link
There is no hate speech on /feminisms. You think there is because you are deluded and paranoid. Now my fiance, who is male and who I don't hate, says I've wasted enough time talking to you. I think he's right. Bye.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Ohh, another man hater is here.
Hey, maybe one day I'll get so obsessed with the man haters that I'll start saving their sexist comments, but until that happens you can either know Donna_Juanita and wonder as well, or you can live in denial. Your problem, not mine.
[–]nordlys 13 points14 points15 points 14 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link
Donna_Juanita is the moderator that censored a bunch of stuff on feminisms by deleting posts that had too much positive karma for her taste. I complained about it to the moderator team, and got a reply from her and another mod. The other mod seemed concerned, but didn't do anything beyond the first reply.
Donna_Juanita's justification was (among other messages that I should unsubscribe and not post to her subreddit, both of which I never did anyway):
Please read the sidebar. /feminisms is for feminism-minded discussion. Anything that does not fit that description is subject to deletion.
Not to say MensRights doesn't have any issues when it comes to fair and valid discussions, but at least here are no mods who abuse their power as far as I know. /r/feminisms is pure propaganda. I wouldn't bother with it.
[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points-3 points 14 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
So when we explain to you that something was deleted because it wasn't feminism-minded, you ignore our explanation and decide that it must have been deleted because it was upvoted? We don't delete things because they have upvotes. We delete them because they violate the rules.
[–]nordlys 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
We don't delete things because they have upvotes. We delete them because they violate the rules.
The only reason I bothered to complain in the first place was that there was a thread in which you had posted several times, and only after you had been downvoted many of the top rated comments were deleted. The thread as a whole wasn't deleted, just select comments. The progress of the thread was screenshotted and linked to elsewhere after that happened.
Also, quoting you from a message again (the last time I bothered speaking to you until now):
If you don't want to chat with us, please don't send any more messages to us. Thank you.
[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points-3 points 14 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Almost all comments in that thread were removed because the thread had been xposted to /mr. I'm assuming the mod left my comments because as a mod they expected me to be able to deal with the downvotes. All those downvotes were courtesy of /mr.
Yes, I told you that because you sent us a message saying we were bigots that you didn't want to talk to. If you don't want to talk to people, don't message them. I think that makes sense.
[–]nordlys 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Here's the thread in question. It was only posted elsewhere after the deletion had started. The thread title complained about the moderation, which is why I bothered complaining to the mod team. Sure, some downvoting may have occurred afterwards, but not all of it.
If it wasn't you who deleted the posts, I'm sorry. Nevertheless, I complained at the time, and you were the only one adamant in protecting the deletions, without really giving an explanation that fit the case.
The bigot comment was a response to telling me to unsubscribe, which I never did in the first place. I explained that I wasn't interested in posting there in the first place. Perhaps I didn't make it clear enough that I wasn't interested in posting there, if only views that coincide with the moderators bigoted views would stand a chance. I find many of the threads there to be bigoted, in that they only look at a specific case, but no one is allowed to post threads with different takes on the same issue.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
No, the deletions were made after a xpost to /mr. The xpost you are talking about was a second xpost that came later.
The reason we don't reply to each "concern" like yours coming from people who are not frequent contributors to /feminisms is because we get too many of them and it's an extreme time sink to try to explain things. Particularly we're not motivated to take time to explain since most people aren't actually interested in an explanation. Priorities. Writing an interesting comment to someone who cares can for obvious reasons feel more relevant than explaining something to someone who most likely doesn't.
Ah fuck it I'll just put my reply to your other comment in this one lol.
I won't deny that there are bigoted people in here too, but I don't think they're on the moderator team.
kloo2yoo, the main mod of this reddit has a blast making fun of and trolling feminists on reddit, but he throws a fit whenever anyone says anything bad about /mr. He got so mad at one person for slandering /mr that he started stalking them with a sock puppet account. You think that's appropriate behavior for a moderator?
As for the downvotes, I'm just writing too fast. They will come in time you'll see. :)
[–]nordlys 4 points5 points6 points 14 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I see. I never saw the first crosspost though... Perhaps it didn't really catch on if you're writing the truth, while the one I saw did. There were some screenshots in it, which I seem to recall had some relevant replies that shouldn't warrant a delete (in my opinion), but I can't seem to find that specific thread with the screenshots now.
As for the kloo2yoo issue, it certainly seems he has some personal issues when you put it like that, but I still don't think his trolling or bigotry has much on an effect on his moderation from what I've seen in my time here. I haven't seen any posts deleted in here, regardless of their takes on things. I mean, if there are specific examples I'd like to see proof of that, but I haven't seen anything startling on my own. Then again, I tend to only browse threads that show up on my subscription pages (which may also include newly posted threads), but not every thread in here.
Thanks for taking the time to post here at least.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I'll ignore someone elses comment and reply to yours, since you're making an effort lol. Priorities! :)
Yep feminists comments get deleted sometimes too after a xpost to /mr. The threads get completely fucked up, and the mods have no other way of putting a stop to it than delete comments. I have requested from the admins that they provide us with some better tools for dealing with it, but nobody seemed interested.
I know it is the consensus here, but I personally don't think deleting stuff is the worst thing a mod can do. When I have gotten comments deleted on reddit, I have checked the rules and made sure I didn't do it again. To me, it's not more complicated than that. I think acting hatefully and irresponsibly is much worse than deleting comments, because it encourages that kind of behavior.
[–]nordlys 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
I think acting hatefully and irresponsibly is much worse than deleting comments, because it encourages that kind of behavior.
Well, I think both are bad. Sure, deletion is what a mod is supposed to do when a post does not conform with the rules, but when I see it used as a form of censorship it's just as bad as troll behaviour, in my opinion.
The thread in question pointed to such an issue of censorship on feminisms, which is why I keep my standpoint on that subreddit. I see complaints of censorship there from time to time, which certainly may be of varying degrees of validity, but in all honestly I haven't spent much time looking into all of those complaints.
Both MensRights and feminisms subreddits have similar issues when it comes to bigotry. There are fairly undeniably more male trolls on the net at the moment, and more of an online anonymous mentality to respond with female or sexually related degenerative comments. I don't personally condone such behaviour outside obvious joking around (in which case I pretty much don't care about which gender, group or race is the butt of the joke; but I understand that the groups affected may get angry about it). I don't agree with censorship in any form, as there are certainly some people who truly believe in such points of view as well.
What I'm trying to say is, I don't mind moderation. It exists for a reason. The reason I'm annoyed with /r/feminists is that I've seen specific examples of cases I deem as abuse of power. I know you say it exists here too, and while I'm not rejecting that outright, I'd like to see specific proof of such abuse. I can't just take your word for it, sorry to say, even though you've been debating with logic and dignity in this thread.
Edit: I may have misread that:
Yep feminists comments get deleted sometimes too after a xpost to /mr.
If that means deleted in /r/feminisms, disregard my last few sentences. I read it as threads from here being crossposted to /r/feminisms, and thus spawning a comment war where feminist comments eventually get deleted. Just realized that might be wrong.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
The way I see it the censoring is done by /mr, because they bury all feminists comments in downvotes. It's possible to change that setting, but it means that all feminists comments will be hidden for users with the default setting.
I don't think we can agree, because we have different priorities. You think peoples right to say whatever they want wherever they want is most important. In regards to /feminisms, my only priority has been to create a place that some feminists may actually be interested in participating in. Despite all our hard work, antifeminists are still often in majority, and many of the best feminist contributors have left reddit because they got sick of it.
To me, that it is impossible to create a feminist majority space on reddit (in /feminisms for example) says a lot about what is politically correct on reddit. (Hint: it's not feminism. ;)

I don't think anyone has yet to argue why the war against the feminism sub-reddits is useful to the MR cause. wabi-sabi's post is the perfect example of what I've read so far: "Because they're hypocrites and it's bullshit." Who the fuck cares what goes on over there? There are so many legitimate MR issues that take second place to this petty, insignificant, and damaging war.
[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points-2 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The argument would be that it is feminism (not society) that is to blame for everything bad that happens to men. A reason there are so many antifeminists here may have something to do with that the main moderator claims in the sidebar that there is an international, antimale feminist conspiracy. This is the same man who thinks that he was hypnotized by 12 year old girls btw. The same man who uses sock puppets to stalk people. The same man who thinks lesbians took over Icelands government and ruined it's economy. The same man who referred to /feminism's moderating practices as a "wet, nasty tampon". The same man who made this troll reddit to make fun of feminists. And so on.
