This title is very misleading. The article it links to says that there is a problem because the life expectancy of women in some parts of the U.S. has fallen. There is no mention of the life expectancy of men. This is obviously a website that focuses on women issues, they make no claim to considering issues from either an unbiased, or a male oriented position. I see no more problem with this, than with r/MensRights not covering the issue of women having difficulty accessing abortions.

I dont see anything wrong with this. So its focused on womens. Its an example of the slant toward women yes but it really should not be stirring so much anger at feminists. Its an interesting and important point but it shouldnt be stirring up so much shit.

Actually this is a classic case where sex-based analysis misses the point. Feminists see everything through a lens of their alleged oppression.

The issues here are more about

Social Class
Race
The demise of the family in large swathes of the US community
The foisting of subsidized unhealthy food on poor Americans leading to obesity heart disease, diabetes.
The absence of a medical care system that provides decent health care for many. People literally die in the US because they cannot afford fairly ordinary health care.

In this context the self-centered whining of feminists makes me feel slightly ill.

I wonder if everyone's life expectancy has decreased in these counties or just women. That seems like a pretty important point.

edit: the actual study is linked in that article here. there are spreadsheets and pdfs of the actual data at the bottom.

edit2: of all the counties where female LE decreased from 1987-2007, men's LE changed on average by about +2-2.5%. So if female LE decreased by 1%, male LE probably increased by 1-1.5%. Similarly, if female LE was down -0.1%, male LE was probably up by 1.9-2.4%.

It's not that female LE has stood still while male LE has caught up, but rather than female LE has actually decreased in 10% of the counties of the US, compared to about 0.1% of counties showing a decrease in male LE.

As far as I can see, there is one person who made a comment that is at best in the minor leagues of anti-man-osity.

You know how we here in men's rights focus on issues from a male slant? Women on feministing focus on the female slant of things? Yes this is something that is happening to both genders, but if there was a study showing the male side of things we'd be upvoting it and talking about what to do about the issue.

At the time of this post, the second-highest chain -- and highest upvoted amount -- is blatant lady-bashing.

What the eff? As if we'd be willing to accept that kind of talk from 2x , feministing, etc. As an ardent defender of what I thought /r/mr was in existence for, I'm embarrassed to be a member of this subreddit right now.

If you're wondering why we don't get taken seriously, as yourself whether or not upvoting a cheap laugh is more important that the types of posts by wavegeekman, fourthirds, or alanna.

TBF. She isn't outraged that women alone are facing lowered LE's. She's angry everyone is. She's lensing the issue within feminism to raise awareness about the unhealthy lifestyles and lack of adequate medical. The only connection I see this article having to the title of this post is the fact it's from feministing.com.

Maybe I don't understand that graphic but it looks like the extreme red represents less-than-zero change and positive changes as it moves toward blue; which is the opposite message the author is trying to put out.

Can someone clear this up for me? I'm missing something.

Even more funny, if you follow the link you will find out that the reason for this is (they seem to believe) obesity. Now if you look around on feministing for a little while, let us say they don't really like diets or dieting in particular, I cite

He says in the same article that 82 percent of the women in the study were obese or “at the very least, overweight” and that very few people are “prone to obesity,” but instead we just haven’t been taught moderation.

Dude. Have you ever heard of the billion dollar weight loss industry? Did you know that most fat people have been on every diet known to man unsuccessfully? Do you honestly believe that we haven’t been taught that if we eat less, we’d weigh more?

Read that whole article, it is an eye opener.

TL;DR: America has an obesity problem and needs to diet -> OMG FAT SHAMING

Because of obesity women are dying earlier -> OMG WHY WON'T ANYONE DO SOMETHING
