Child abuse and child neglect are unforgivable crimes, no matter what sort of plumbing the victim has. This shit isn't a men's rights issue or a women's rights issue. It's an individual rights issue. Children have no choice but to trust their parents to care for them. They have a right to expect their parents to do their best to care for them, not starve them to death because they're the wrong sex.

We're all human beings. This isn't a mens or womens rights issue. This is a humanitarian issue. This involves EVERYONE. Feminists haven't quite gotten that far, it seems.

I think this article highlights one of the traditional causes of restricted gender roles and violation of basic human rights: poverty. Poor societies are ones where resources are restricted, and people - morally or immorally - are forced to make decisions about who will live and who will die. In the past, for example, some cultures living in the arctic circle had to practice infanticide, when there was not enough food to go around or to support a new child. Parents had to make the painful decision of letting a newborn die so that their other children may live.

In the particular case of India, after seeing the movie Slumdog Millionaire, I tend to feel there are certain cultural attitudes towards children born into low income situations among certain members of Indian society. Child labor seems to still be considered socially acceptable by at least a part of the population.

Your article illustrates that one of the fundamental ways that human rights and human and personal growth can be achieved, regardless of gender, is the alleviation of poverty. When families make a decent income, they tend over time to devote those resources to the development and welfare of all their children, and don't choose to benefit one gender at the expense of the other child for economic reasons. What's happening with these children in India happened in western societies in the past as well: male children were considered more beneficial because it was assumed they were stronger, could work harder and do more to provide for their parents and their family, and female children were seen somewhat as a liability.

The MRM is first and foremost, a movement about human rights. It assumes that all human beings, regardless of their gender, are entitled to basic human rights and human needs. Letting female children starve or female fetuses be aborted simply because they are female is morally repugnant to anyone, not just to MRAs, because it is a denial of the basic value of any human being, regardless of their gender.

We can also extrapolate from this article that ending poverty and providing the opportunity for equitable economic growth advances the rights and opportunities of both males and females, and allows them to define for themselves what makes them happy and how they can go about achieving it. Males and females in developed countries have more opportunities to break out of restrictive gender roles because those societies are economically developed, and basic needs of food, shelter, etc., are assured in the long term.

OK, I will bite, just so that the opinions of (at least one) MRA are not misconstrued.

I will say that killing or neglecting girls is unequivocally a bad thing and reflective of real, not imagined, misogyny.

However, you will note that it is not happening in a truly Western country. The issues that MRA seeks to address are really mostly about the West, and its laws and cultural norms that place huge burdens on men. Indian misogyny has no bearing on Western MRA.

If anything, this serves as an example of true misogyny, in stark contrast to all of the imagined examples of "hatred" that radical feminists dream up.

This is a horrifying reality that real feminists of both genders should be fighting against. The majority of western feminists I have talked to do not care much about the treatment of women in developing countries and are more interested in gaining legal power and privilege over males in the context of wealthy western societies. The gender disparities that still exist in pluralistic western countries are trivial compared to the kind of widespread female infanticide described here, female circumcision, and sexual slavery that is so prevalent in the developing world. Feminist women in the western world like to complain that they are "exploited" or "discriminated against" - and in certain circumstances, they certainly are - just as men are in other circumstances. But they're not being systematically murdered, mutilated, starved, or enslaved purely because of their gender. This is commonplace in much of the world and when I hear feminists complaining about the "male oppression" of "forcing a negative body-image on women" or "slut-shaming" I think about the hundreds of thousands of girls who had their clits forcibly cut off as children. That's not happening in the western world. It's strange to me that the western feminist can rail against such trivial social niceties with no negative repercussions for the female except for hurting their feelings when in neighboring countries, women are being systematically destroyed.

India is simply becoming like every other impoverished country that first world county multinational corporations have outsourced shit to. They need workhorses (that is, men) to slave away for the corporate interests of the outsourcers. So they value boys more because men are far more willing to work long hours and produce more.

It's an issue rooted in the kind of slash and burn capitalism that's causing our current economic problems.

On another side note...their daughters are dying, and yet all that Indian feminists can complain about are men on their railway cars. Why aren't Indian women up in arms about this? Why aren't they actively trying to save their daughters?

This is damn disgusting and I can only feel sorry for those little girls who are suffering and the little boys who are being "blamed" for this disaster.

I think it sounds similar to the issue China has.

Namely that men are expected to be providers but women are not. Since they are also expected to be providers for their parents in their old age, naturally parents would prefer men.

If women want equality there, then women need to take up that mantle and become providers too.
