We’ve been dating two and a half months - I’m 27F, he’s 29M.

He works with his dad in the trades. I love that he’s capable and handy, it’s very masculine and sexy to me. He’s also very sweet, openly wants to get married and have kids, all that good stuff.

My hang-up is that he doesn’t seem to have a concrete plan for the future. He’s unsure if he wants to stay with his dad (and eventually take over) or do his own thing, which is fair, but he talks about it like it’s a far-off decision when I don’t think it is. I’d like to have kids sooner rather than later, and I feel like that’s not possible before job stuff is figured out.

He also sometimes plays hot and cold - like mentioning baby names when we were out to dinner with my mom, but then backtracking and saying it’s too early for that type of talk just a week later. But why bring it up unprompted then? Or he’ll forget things, like offering to pay me back for something then never sending the money. Saying he really likes me and that I make him happy (unprompted) then forgetting to call when he said he would. I don’t want to nag him so I just asked him not to suggest a call if he is busy or can’t follow through. I don’t think it’s that hard? But I can’t tell if I’m just looking for problems. No one is perfect, and I’m certainly not either!

I guess I’m just worried about how reliable he’ll be long-term if this is how it is now. And I’m nervous about hitching to a train where I don’t know where it’s going.

Should I be letting go of this fear or is this something to be wary of? It just feels like there’s something off, but that could also be me just self-sabotaging, and I don’t want to ruin a good thing with a good guy over nothing.

Can someone talk some sense into me please?
