I had never heard of the song, so I had to look it up. It strikes me as a cynical attempt to capitalise on the contemporary mainstream hostility towards men and masculinity. Critics seem to universally praise the 'message', even where they don't like the song itself.

The lyrics, 'boys will be boys, but girls will be women' implies that boys aren't expected to grow out of the naivety and unaccountability of their youth, but girls have to grow up quickly and be vigilant at all times. This is simply not true and is just another manifestation of the ignorant idea that men have much easier and more carefree lives than women on the whole. Men are expected to bear the weight of their own problems in adulthood; emotional vulnerability is often seen as weakness and inadequacy. At the same time, men are expected to bear the emotional weight of their partners, to 'listen and shut up', and to sacrifice for others without complaint. The fact is, most people have no idea what the men in their lives are going through. You'll likely never know if a man you know had been raped or abused because few men have the support and security to come forward about things like that.

I had an appointment with an ADHD specialist recently. I talked about how I had been diagnosed with and treated for depression, in addition to ADHD, and how I've struggled to do any productive work for years now. The first thing he said to me was that it was good I was upfront about it with him, since most guys wouldn't be so open and would go without appropriate support.

In summary, it is an insipid and cynical song that exploits the ignorance of mainstream misandrists who will cheer along to an anthem of hatred, so long as it aligns with their lazy, out-of-touch, and warped perception of the world.

This is feminism. It gets to be correct because it's a complex series of Kafka traps disguised as an egalitarian movement.

She mentions mansplaining at one point. Then later ironically tells the listener how they should feel about her song, in a condescending, dismissive manner. Okay.

Boys will be boys and girls will be girls could be a positive, socially progressive way of encouraging people to let everyone be who they want to be.

If boys want to roughhouse and play sports because that's how they are, then we should let them. And importantly, we should allocate time in schools for them to do that. And not medicate them into submission because they can't sit still when we don't want to give them the attention that they need and deserve to grow up into healthy, functioning adults.

Likewise we should let girls be girls, or be boys if they really want to. There's nothing wrong with tomboys or trans or gay people or anything like that. But working with averages you're going to have more girls who want to be feminine, and more boys who want to be masculine. And that is ok! We should allow that and let that happen! We should respect our differences just like we respect different cultures and races and nationalities (while also celebrating our shared humanity).

The problem is "boys will be boys" is often implied to mean that boys are predators and rapists and that corrective action needs to be taken. That we need to beat all of the toxic, masculine traits out of them before it is too late and they grow up into big, bad, scary men. Which means no gym, no sports, no exercise, no video games, no porn, and no roughhousing. And then you get boys who can't pay attention in school because they have pent up energy and nothing to do with it.

And that's honestly when you might find some of the more socially negative traits manifesting from boys. But most people don't see it that way. They think boys need to be controlled and disciplined, which is really just a form of oppression if you think about it.

Isn't that basically saying males are immature and females are mature?

I know technically girls mature a bit earlier than boys do but in the adult world I see A LOT of coddling and infantilizing happening towards women from both the conservative and feminist sides. My anecdotal life experiences have conformed to this as well.
