This is spot on how I feel. I've been chastised for not being forward enough by women because if I'm wrong I'm the creep at best or a sexual predator at worst. Even if it's just a smile, if they don't see me as an attractive guy I'm creepy and weird.

We recently had company wide sexual harassment training where it was said that talking about any physical characteristic, even dress can be seen as harassment. Someone even questioned the presenter on this and she doubled down that this can most definitely be harassment. But this was obviously meant exclusively for the men. A couple days after, I had a women comment on something I was wearing and I brought this up and broke out the booklet that says "Commenting on a co-workers appearance can be harassment" and was laughed off and told straight that this didn't apply. I responded that "if you want to risk your job , that's your choice. I'm not gonna get fired because I can't keep things professional" and just walked off. What it comes down to is "damned if you, damned if you don't". But I'd rather be the weird guy with a job.

Reminds me that "Be attractive, don't be unattractive" bit from Saturday Night Live. It was supposed to be satire, but there's a lot of truth in it.

[–]ur_waifus_prolapse 26 points27 points28 points 6 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

The "nice guy" slur is just feminist deflection. "Nice guys" don't think they deserve sex because they're "nice" in some cosmic sense. They're trying to grapple with the fact that they're scorned, shamed, emasculated, and involuntarily celibate for decades, whereas serial wife beaters, drug addicts, and violent idiots are seemingly swimming in pussy. Their feminist media can't stop screaming about how horrible abuse and toxicity are, and yet extreme toxicity is rewarded; a toxicity that they do not share on every observable axis. When you're deep into feminist "respect women" mode, and you start noticing these things, your brain almost melts trying to deal with the cognitive dissonance.

There are only two ways to resolve the dissonance: either convince yourself you are somehow more toxically masculine in your soft-spoken, egalitarian liberalism than the rapists and the thugs in an act of supreme self-hatred, or accept that there is something deeply dysfunctional in women's mate choices.

No matter how woke feminist a woman is, she still isn't going to be attracted to some wimpy doormat. Even Gloria Steinem dated a football player.

[–]LeJacquelope 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No matter how woke feminist a woman is, she still isn't going to be attracted to some wimpy doormat.

And nowhere do feminists stop and think... the problem isn't the so-called wimpy doormat. The problem is with the person who abuses or exploits them.

There's a growing attitude around reddit that men who wind up with abusive girlfriends / wives brought it on themselves. And while I'm sure there's a little bit of blame to be had with ignoring red flags and things like that, almost nobody wants to criticize the women in these relationships.

And it's not like these women are all that rare, either. Especially for a lot of men who don't have looks / money. All the non crazy, non red flag girls are taken. So all the mean and emotionally unstable ones are left to pair up with all the "nice guys". And then people wonder why they get bitter about everything. Like I'm sorry but if you "taught women" to be nice in return and not walk all over men who are more docile in life, we wouldn't have this problem. Instead what they're doing is "teaching men" to be toxic in order to survive in the dog-eats-dog world of modern dating.

Women could just be nicer to men, but instead they want men to be mean and combative to balance everything out.

[–]LeJacquelope -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And while I'm sure there's a little bit of blame to be had with ignoring red flags and things like that, almost nobody wants to criticize the women in these relationships.

My posts about violent women and the many women who cheer them on are quite numerous. There is certainly that. I approach the issue from both angles.

The way to defeat women and their "teach men to be toxic" mentality is to militantly filter the fuck out of women based on their moral character. Refuse to date feminists like this and they fail to procreate. It's just that brutal and simple, even if terribly painful (a lot of men will die alone). Hard choices and all that.

[–]ExcellentTraffic123 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

The "nice guy" slur is just feminist deflection.

Interestingly, I first came across the expression "nice guy" in a book about dating I read about 15 years ago. I forget exactly which one, but it was written by one of the PUA types (and not Roosh V).

I think I once read a comment by someone on r/askfeminists or r/menslib who said that the essence of the "nice guy" syndrome is that a man basically expects sex as a result of feeding "virtue tokens" to the lady he desires to be with.

The author of the dating book said that this is a losing strategy that will make a man come across as needy, and therefore, undesirable.

As a man, imagine the situation in reverse. If there is a lady that you are not the least bit attracted to, would it make you suddenly find her attractive if she lavishes expensive gifts on you? This was actually portrayed in "Two and a Half Men" where the perpetually inept Alan Harper is hit on by an older lady whom he finds physically unattractive who tries to woo Alan with grand visions of a business partner ship where they will found the "Alan Harper Healing Center" together. (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0735167/)

There are only two ways to resolve the dissonance: either convince yourself you are somehow more toxically masculine in your soft-spoken, egalitarian liberalism than the rapists and the thugs in an act of supreme self-hatred, or accept that there is something deeply dysfunctional in women's mate choices.

I don't suspect that your average feminist has a conscious agenda to teach egalitarian men to hold themselves "more toxically masculine" than rapists and thugs. I think that they're probably frustrated with men trying to hit on them in ways that makes them uncomfortable.

I find it problematic that you talk about something "deeply dysfunctional in women's mate choices". From a feminist point of view, it comes across as very entitled, but from an egalitarian point of view, I've certainly witnessed men making poor mate choices just the same. I used to personally know a guy at work who said that his wife beats him, and he says that he is thankful for that because he believes he would die without her beating him to guide him. (I did not make that up!)

I totally understand that it can be quite maddening to see scummy people get the mates they want, but the bottom line is that finding a mate is not necessarily a product of virtue.

I'm curious what your opinion on this would be: https://slatestarcodex.com/2014/08/31/radicalizing-the-romanceless/

[–]ExcellentTraffic123 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

It's been a while since I've read "Radicalizing the Romanceless", but in summary, I've found it to be one of the more lucid things written by a "romanceless" male, if we can call the author that.

I think he made some great points about how a man not getting the romantic attention he desires could receive very harmful messages from the feminist movement. It does concern me that many men who criticise the feminist movement seem bent on hating women and/or pining for a return to some imagined past golden age, but I thought that the Slate Star Codex author did a great job of lucidly explaining the plight her experienced as a "romanceless" male from both a logical and humane point of view.

It may have not been his intention, but I think that by using his analogy between romanceless men and poor people, he also did well to describe the plight of the poor who are so consumed with their need to make ends meet that they forgo needed medical treatment.

I fear that much of the talk about "incels" in recent years is extremely harmful. When I was in my teens and early twenties, men who didn't secure romantic partners were derided as "losers", but I can't remember that they were ever derided as would-be terrorists and criminals. As an aside, I thought that the speculation that the 2019 "Joker" film would inspire a terrorist act was over-the-top hysteria. In that film, we had a top-flight actor realistically and sympathetically portraying a man struggling with poverty and mental illness. I usually don't even go out to the movies, but I saw this film twice; thinking that it was brilliant how the film made the average person see the world thru the eyes of a mentally ill person for a few hours. I felt that the people who made the movie wanted to make us empathize with those less fortunate, but there were some critics who screamed "NO, those people are inhuman!"

[–]mewacketergi 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I fear that much of the talk about "incels" in recent years is extremely harmful.

It is. They are some of the most disenfranchised people today, but there is a taboo against considering their alienation, struggles and pain from an angle of anything other than "they need to get a therapist".

When women face difficulty, it's the society's fault, when men do, the responsibility is always on the individual.

[–]ExcellentTraffic123 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I think that de-stigmatizing loneliness would be an excellent goal for any LWMA, men's libber, or MRA. (or feminist, for that matter!)

I find it interesting that it was actually a woman who coined the term "incel" to describe her own experience and how she came to identify with loneliness, and of course, there are women who self-apply the label to this day.

I think that the stigma associated with loneliness has at least two origins.

One is that not having a mate is seen as a sign that there is something wrong with you. Some folks have actually proposed that virgin-shaming is actually a good thing, arguing that virgin-shaming would motivate people to become better. (Personally, I think this is awful because people should have the right to make their own choices so long as they harm no one else.) In the end, I think it's no better than slut-shaming, which has been defended by some tradcons as an essential way for society to protect itself from "degeneracy", as if an individual person has some vaguely defined obligation to behave like everyone else.

The other origin of the stigma is that lonely people tend to be frustrated and angry, and in the age of Reddit, they tend to form echo-chambers of anger and frustration such as the recently banned r\braincels. There exist other incel subreddits and some of them are specifically for female incels.

I understand that people are seriously concerned with the anger, frustration, and outright sexism expressed by such people. It can be downright frightening to know that your neighbors can be harboring these sentiments, but as someone who has experienced extended loneliness myself, I refuse to hate these people or wish them ill.

I think that the ultimate solution to the problem is to help people be better, not to denigrate them for being lonely. We can't heap scorn upon marginalized people and then haughtily and self-righteously pat ourselves on the back for supposedly being better than them and expect things to get better. In the words of MLK, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that."

[–]mewacketergi 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I find it interesting that it was actually a woman who coined the term "incel" to describe her own experience and how she came to identify with loneliness, and of course, there are women who self-apply the label to this day.

And who made that label popular, dare I ask, — It sure as hell weren't the MRAs. And what about actually helping those people? The 'slibbers sure seem more interested in making the women feel safe, than helping the marginalized men.

[–]ExcellentTraffic123 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I can't say who made the label popular, but I will point out something important.

The stigma associated with the label is not going to go away simply by using a different label.

It's sort of like how the labels "retard" and "moron" were originally meant to be clinical labels that wouldn't carry social stigma, but because of the social stigma associated with what they describe, these labels (and any others that may replace them) will carry the same stigma so long as society has the same attitudes towards the people these labels describe.

[–]mewacketergi 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I meant to draw your attention towards noticing that it's the feminists, and by extension, the 'slibbers who are in a position of power to do something about this issue, but are unwilling to do so.

[–]ExcellentTraffic123 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You are correct.

While I think of my point of view as being generally pro-feminist, I do believe that those affected by male issues need to organize and fight to resolve those issues.

I think that it is good that we are reaching a point where some feminists are acknowledging male issues (even if they want to turn around and blame men for their own suffering), but I think we are nowhere near where we need to be to achieve a broadly supported egalitarian movement.

I believe that we ultimately need a broad egalitarian movement because male and female issues are ultimately intertwined. I agree with others who say that a great starting point would be a coalition to push for equal paid new-parent leave. It's a no-brainer for feminists and MRAs alike. The only people I could really see opposing it are corporatists who would oppose it behind the scenes and tradcons who would openly oppose it.

[–]LeJacquelope 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

This was actually portrayed in "Two and a Half Men" where the perpetually inept Alan Harper is hit on by an older lady whom he finds physically unattractive who tries to woo Alan with grand visions of a business partner ship where they will found the "Alan Harper Healing Center" together.

I always hated that sitcom, especially that episode. I would have found myself losing all sympathy for Harper after that, but for the enormous implied age difference which was designed to make it necessary beyond a doubt for him to find her unattractive. They didn't want to be honest and make her his age but, say, fat, which a lot of foolish men find irrecoverably unattractive. To that I like to say if you aren't attracted to her when she's fat, you're not really attracted to her when she's thin. (Same applies for women and short men.)

This deplorable level of superficiality is as much a man's undoing as female hypergamy.

I find it problematic that you talk about something "deeply dysfunctional in women's mate choices". From a feminist point of view, it comes across as very entitled, but from an egalitarian point of view, I've certainly witnessed men making poor mate choices just the same

TheRedPill (TRP) in particular encourages this foolish behavior by men, by making sex with beautiful women the ultimate northstar for their disciples. On the Purple Pill Debate sub they had a question of whether men would rather date a crazy hot babe or an unattractive woman. One man said that he'd choose a crazy hot babe because dating an unattractive woman was like eating glass or drinking poison.

I totally understand that it can be quite maddening to see scummy people get the mates they want, but the bottom line is that finding a mate is not necessarily a product of virtue.

And that is the primary cause of the downfall of countless men and women alike. I have said many times that men need to base their mating choices on a woman's moral character, personality traits and lifestyle compatibility, far ahead of looks. TRP won't have it, it's like asking them to worship Satan... er, wait...

[–]AlwaysNeverNotFresh 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

How is it foolish to place importance on a woman's appearance?

[–]LeJacquelope -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Because it leaves men vulnerable to abuse by pretty but totally reprobate women, that's why.

[–]AlwaysNeverNotFresh 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Are these men not also vulnerable to abuse by non-pretty women?

It might be less impactful, sure, but I think what you're saying is more a factor of these women being reprobate than their being pretty.

[–]LeJacquelope 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This isn't about pretty vs non-pretty, it's about a woman's moral character. Focus on that and the incidence of abuse will drop. Men who obsess over looks tend to ignore a woman's character, that is part of their problems, even if abusive women are a bigger problem.

[–]AlwaysNeverNotFresh 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You're conflating two words here.

"Obsess" and "place value on" are two different concepts. I said the latter, but you continue to use the former.

I agree that "obsessing" over looks is often (but not always) a bad thing because obsessing about any one particular feature is generally not advisable, no matter the reason for the obsession. Merely "placing value on" or "assigning relative importance to" a woman's looks is often not a bad thing, though.

[–]LeJacquelope 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Obsess" and "place value on" are two different concepts. I said the latter, but you continue to use the former.

TRP in particular obsesses. I place value on looks - I just give it a lower value than other more important and longer-lasting traits.

[–]Flaktrack 20 points21 points22 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Like a lot of the commenters there, I struggled with some minor NiceGuy shit because I believed the lies the feminists who kept coming to my schools told us. It took a while for the cognitive dissonance to be too much to handle but wow was it ever a liberating experience to just trust my self and be a man.

It's a message I've spread ever since: don't let women tell you what being a man means because they do not understand. Find men who live good lives and let them be your role models.

[–]LacklustreFriend 15 points16 points17 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It case you missed it that post was made by one of the current mods of this subreddit, albeit before this subreddit was created.

[–]rotmeat 16 points17 points18 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The problem with gender has more or less always been that 1) most women don't like hostile sexism but 2) most women really like benevolent sexism and 3) benevolent sexism and hostile sexism are inextricably tied to each other.

This leads to revolutions (and counter-revolutions, and counter-counter-revolutions) where different groups of women try to dictate what the best balance is, and different groups of men do their best to placate them.

Feminist women, speaking very broadly, focus on promoting non-hostile sexism (meaning both the idea of equality as well as the frequent practice of benevolent sexism). But in doing so, they encourage egalitarian men to drop the behaviors that women are attracted to in the first place, leading to even the vast majority of feminist women preferring sexist men over egalitarian ones (original research paper here).

So, a lot of men wind up in this trap where they want to not be a bad, evil, misogynistic man, but then become undateable even by feminist women when they accomplish that.

They say the personal is the political.

I really hate the idea that personal experiences really matter in the grand scheme of things given all that we know about bias and so on, but for the feminists that read the sub, I'll add that the research 100% backs up my own experiences.

My very first non-online girlfriend, who was a staunch feminist, cheated on me with a guy she herself described as an asshole, and I found myself getting repeatedly cheated on, abused, and treated like a loser, including by other feminist women, specifically (and explicitly) for not being a sexist, not engaging in "toxic masculinity," and so on.

I'm sure there are assholes who really do treat women like sex PEZ dispensers (I really do), but when I hear some guy wonder why he can't get laid when he's such a nice guy, I'm frankly not concerned about the obnoxious guy complaining on Facebook that some specific woman didn't give him sex; instead, I'm remembering the last half a dozen times I was abused or treated like shit specifically because I wasn't sexist enough for the women in my life.

Women need to be better.

[–]LeJacquelope 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I figured this might be relevant to your story

[–]serpentineeyelash 11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I pretty much agree with all that. Feminists browbeat us into following all their rules, and then turn around and browbeat us for following their rules too well. It's one of the things that makes it very difficult for me to see feminism as a well-intentioned movement.

This sub is less toxic then the men's rights sub.

Yes male sexuality needs to be socially acceptable and the male sexuality is inherently violent stereotype needs to die.

[–]azazelcrowley 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's an example of generations long gaslighting of men by feminists. I made a thread a while back on mens rights in reference to a menslib thread where the posters were admitting spending time in feminist spaces basically makes them mentally ill and racked with self-confidence issues and shame, it dabbled into them admitting they were basically nice guys for ages as a consequence too.

That is not a result that can arise from an empathetic and sincere engagement with men.

[–]highmrk 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah dude we gotta deprogram ourselves. Read the classic books! And FYI don’t just blame feminism. Look at the role of capitalism and our broader push at urbanization.
