**Just gonna dump some comments I made before but I think they apply here.

First off, let me give you my definition of an incel. Its someone who has almost no chance of attracting a partner due to genetic or otherwise immutable conditions. For example, being poor (no disabilty) or fat is not really a reason to be an incel because those can be easily worked on. I fall under purview because I'm autistic, short, and ugly. I don't care about the so called incel ideology; all of my beliefs come from my experiences. I occasionally used to post on reddit incel forums out of a sense of solidarity with guys in similar positions.

Ok lets get another thing out of the way. I completely understand why women are not attracted to me and I'm ok with it. Also Ive never been on a date so I don't think I'm qualified to talk about it, but I have a few observations. Women will aggressively pursue the guys they want as long as they have options and those guys are usually neurotypical, tall and good looking. Why bother if you don't fit those criteria. For example, I hit it off with a girl online but she went completely cold once she saw my selfie. I still chatted with her though. Now 2 years later after going through over dozen partners and catching herpes and HPV, she wants to meet up and go on a date. Women are also way more judgemental about looks than men are.

Most incels are aware that they are the problem, just isn't much they can do about it. And on self improvement, you realize that people only care for the end result. I was born with a lot of disadvantages. Ugly, black, poor, non verbal autism. On top of that my parents physically abused and disfigured me and ruined my credit. I think I'm doing pretty well for myself financially and mentally now, but your average, hell even below average, neurotypical person is still leagues above in capability and attractiveness. No one cares about my self improvement journey, If I suck, I just suck.

Do you have any evidence? From what I know early humans were promiscuous, so were our close monkey relatives - they mated easily, betas did grooming and got laid. I don't think incel status was common at all. Think about it, none of our ancestors were incels. No genetic information of an incel survives his lifespan, Incels died out, that's how evolution works. To say its the natural state of humans is “not even wrong”.

Before all of this, people were at various times pushed together in an arrangement, or the circles were much smaller and less cliquey so it was possible for your average wrench turner-class man to interact regularly with a more attractive woman, and vice versa.

Inceldom might have been more common in prehistory, but around the beginning of civilization, women's natural proclivity to cluster around alpha males was curtailed, and women were more evenly distributed among the men, via various mechanisms such as (arranged) marriage monogamy, legislation and religion, to give men a stake in society and a reason to sacrifice themselves to the project if necessary.

So no, men didn't always have to put in the same level of work to have a wife and family as they do now.

A major difference between inceldom in the stone age and inceldom now is that there is more emphasis now on being dominant to other men. A prehistoric family would have probably divided the labor along gender roles and any man, as long as he wasn't the runt if the litter, would have been a benefit. A woman probably would babe preferred to be with the chief but she didn't have to be.

In our modern civilization, women are empowered to do most anything a man can do, often can do it better with the aid of modern technology and social support, and/or can outsource it to elite men without having to pay the biological costs of bearing children for those guys.

Which means that the average or lower male jn the modern day is mostly useless at best or an active liability at worst. Average men are increasingly struggling to remain relevant in a world that needs them less and less, and the low-value men, previously having at least some value to society as fodder, are seeing the writing on the wall and dropping out, sometimes with a final, impotent, rage-filled attempt to take others with them on thier way out.
