Crosspost "Benefits of Waiting Until Marriage" from /r/SavingSexForMarriage:

I am still editing this post, when I am finished, the final draft will be added to our menu.

  1. Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Waiting until marriage to have sex dramatically decreases the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease. The CDC estimates that 1 in 5 people in the U.S. have a sexually transmitted infection. With numbers that high, do you really wanna take a chance?

  1. Unplanned Pregnancies

Abstinence is the only method of birth control that is 100% effective at preventing pregnancy. Practicing abstinence ensures that a woman won't become pregnant.

Women: You will have peace of mind knowing that there is no chance you could be pregnant. You will know with absolute certainty who the father of your child is.

Men: You will have peace of mind knowing that you do not have any children whose existence you are not aware of.

  1. Reduced Risk of Divorce & Infidelity

Studies show that the more previous sexual partners someone has prior to marriage, the more likely their marriage is to end in divorce. There is also evidence to suggest that the more previous sexual partners someone has, the more likely they are to cheat on their spouse. While waiting until marriage does not eliminate the risk of divorce or infidelity, it does give couples the best chance according to statistics, to have a long and happy marriage.

  1. Retroactive Jealousy

Jealousy is a natural human emotion, it is not only normal but extremely common. Jealousy can often manifest in romantic relationships. When a person experiences feelings of jealousy, insecurity or resentment surrounding their partners sexual past, this is often called retroactive jealousy. Some people are better at coping with retroactive jealousy than others. However for some individuals like myself, the symptoms of retroactive jealousy are just so overwhelming that maintaining a healthy romantic relationship with a non-virgin partner is simply impossible.

For people like myself, the only way to overcome retroactive jealousy is to avoid it altogether. I know that if I tried to force myself into a relationship with a non-virgin that my feelings of jealousy and insecurity would just be so overwhelming that it would inevitably lead to the breakdown of the relationship. If my partner isn’t a virgin, I will constantly compare myself to his previous partners. If he isn’t a virgin, it will be impossible for me to enjoy having sex with him because my mind will be busy imagining him having sex with his previous partners. The idea that my future husband could be out there in the world right now, banging some other chick causes me to feel angry and devastated.

If anything I just mentioned resonated with you, then you probably suffer from retroactive jealousy as well. Do not be fooled into thinking that your feelings are invalid or that you are overreacting, retroactive jealousy is not only normal but extremely common. I believe that we as individuals ought to consider the impact that our current sexual behavior might have on future relationships. Much of human sexual behavior is rooted in evolutionary psychology. There is a wealth of scientific evidence prove this. Still not convinced? Check out my sources below.

  1. Ulterior Motives

Unfortunately we live in a world filled with liars. People lie for various reasons. In the context of a relationship, a man might lie to a woman in order to obtain sex, a woman might lie to a man in order to obtain money, or vice versa. This can often lead many to wonder whether or not their partner has sincere intentions, or if they are simply using them as a means to an end. This is why marriage os so important. Marriage is so much more than a piece of paper. Marriage offers security and stability. If your partner is not married to you, then you will have no way of verifying whether or not they truly love you or if they are only using you (in most cases) for sexual satisfaction.
