Yeah, they are really asking for some sort of lawsuit there. It's just not clear what grounds people have to sue social media companies.

This is becoming a big problem with the industry in general. Google, Twitter and Facebook, too. These big social media companies ate putting in place policies that would almost certainly open them up to some sort of legal liability in any other context, the loophole is just that nothing technically applies.

Just about every other entity out there would be prohibited from having a policy like the one you mentioned by one of the following things:

1) First amendment, other constitutional rights; it would absolute be illegal for any state, local or federal government to ban people from speaking about anything, particularly on the basis of race/gender, but those rules only apply to the government, not private companies. So social media companies don't count.

2) Employment discrimination / harassment laws, it would be illegal for an employer to explicitly discriminate against people on the basis of race/gender or to have policies that obviously tip the scales, or to allow for such rules to exist in their offices/factories/warehouses etc.. But users of a website have no grounds to claim employment discrimination. Only the direct employees.

3) The civil rights act, which prohibits discrimination in public places. So, customers of stores, restaurants etc. are protected from those businesses instituting a policy of kicking people out based on race/gender or related opinions. But, social media is not a public place.

4) The federal communications act gives the FCC authority to regulate media, including things like the equal time rule which would prevent a radio or television broadcaster from routinely publishing lopsided political content with no opposing view. But, social media is a platform and as such is generally able to evade FCC regulation.

Basically big social media just evades all checks and balances. It seems they can theoretically make any crazy rule they want and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

The only thing I can possibly think of is if this is some sort of antitrust violation. Since users of social media do business over it, it seems to me that an arbitrary and over-reaching social media policy could be considered an unreasonable restraint of interstate trade.

Perhaps that is a question for a legal advice community.

'Othering' has always been a part of tribal identity. The idea that this is either exclusive to or an invention of white people is ridiculous. Racism existed in countless countries long before a white man ever set foot there.

Western media/history is going to have a western bias' that's hardly surprising. Same would be true of 'eastern' media/history and so on.

There is also plenty of media that looks at western conquerors in a negative light - I would argue in the current climate it is far more acceptable and common to negatively portray the actions of white historical figures than other races.

As to other races or ethnicities not having race based gangs- do you really think that is true or just that you don't hear about it? There are plenty of modern racial crimes from non white races - you just don't want to see it.

I am not excusing white supremacy far from it. Just saying that the best way to combat it is to be honest about racial realities not claiming it is simply a case of nasty white people. Whether white people do it more or less feels more about trying to blame a certain demographic (fighting racism with racism as you suggested) rather than trying to reduce racism. I sincerely believe your approach makes racial tensions worse not better.

Also out of curiosity, where is the literature from all the places you claim have little to no racism? White Order of Thule

The White Order of Thule was a loosely organized American society formed in the mid-1990s by federal prisoner Peter Georgacarakos, art school graduate Michael Lujan and New Age occultist Joseph Kerrick. It described itself as an "esoteric brotherhood working toward the revitalization of the Culture-Soul of the European people". The Southern Poverty Law Center has described it as a racist hate group based in Deer Park, Washington. The group ceased publication of their newsletter Crossing the Abyss (for the first issue it was called simply "The Abyss") and announced that they were disbanding in 2000.
