How many of you guys didn't know that an apparently significant percentage of working wives believe that it's entirely the husband's responsibility to pay the costs of living; rent/mortgage, utilities, etc.?

When I was growing up my dad and step mother had a joint checking account and both of their paychecks went into it. Years later when I was in my 40s I was talking to my next door neighbor and she's telling me that she's going to be quitting her job and I asked her how they'll make it on one paycheck and she tells me that she isn't sharing the costs of living with her husband. I was flabbergasted but didn't say anything.

At that time I was carpooling to dog classes with a woman (divorced) who was a nurse and asked her and she just shrugged and said that lots of the nurses at the hospital had that arrangement.

I've since heard of instances of it several times. My impression is that it's quite common.
