Why does someone try to postpone a divorce as long as possible?

1) Lawyers make more money 🤑

2) Vindictive, revenge, making one party suffer.

3) Chasing cash and prices, convinced the pay day will come.

4) Receiving cash and prizes. We need to sell the martial home, the longer the delay the longer she gets to stay there for free on my dime

5) Fighting every little detail

6) Not able to compromise. This cuts both ways. Fathers fighting for 50/50 and wife's with insane demands.

7) Refusing to negotiate and having the judge decide everything.

8) The courts are full and backed up. It can take months to get a court date and COVID didn't help

9) The lawyers make more money 💰

Sometimes it's simple as stated above, sometimes it's much more complex. I am approaching the three year mark. First two years was a combination of Covid dramatically slowing the court system down and the judge continuing to keep extending the case to give my spouse and opportunity to show she can afford to keep the home and buy me out. The past year I could have settled but I was fortunate to pick a good attorney. With all of the insane behavior from the spouse he advised me to hire a guardian to intervene not only to make sure the kids are safe, but to put a leash on her behavior. His advice was if I don't do this I will have to manage this behavior for the next decade. I was skeptical but my attorney was dead on the mark. In the past year custody has gone from 1 day a week to 50/50. The guardian has put a lock down on custody exchanges by moving them from the police station to drop off/pick up at school. And finally had enough of her vitriol to conclude that the spouse has some type of personality disorder and had the judge order a psychiatric evaluation.

The first two years lines up with the old strategy of delaying so she could live in the marital home mortgage free. The last year was a strategic play on my side just to help knock out the bullshit from her. The way it's going I may end up with full custody and selling the home. If I hadn't taken my attorneys advice, I may have exposed my kids to a lifetime of her toxic behavior. This is an example we share all the time of listen to your attorney. Sometimes we are to far down in the fox hole to understand what's really going on on the battlefield.

Who benefits from postponing the divorce? I saw a lawyer yesterday and was asked that question. In my case, I was told that it's to her benefit. The longer that we're married, the more she gets in the end.

I've seen it done to prolong her new romance. She accepted a new marriage proposal while she was still married. #1 husband found out and prolonged it as long as he possibly could. It ended up working in his favor because #2 husband was well off and she got tired of Waiting on #1 husband on Financials. She was gonna be taken care of by #2 husband anyway so she let him off the hook financial for him to sign the papers which he did right away. Now 15 years later and #2 husband is getting taken for everything he has by her!
