Basics:

Cold water for dark colors. Hot water for white ONLY. Don't mix dark and white.

Entire wash and spin should be about 30 minutes tops.

Don't use the dryer, ever.

Delicates like sweaters, wash in the sink. Can use standard "people soap". Soak. Wiggle the clothes with your hands. Rinse well, 2 or 3x.

In the washing machine, instead of detergent: Baking soda is unscented and doesn't eat into fabrics.

I also highly recommend go clean Co on social media.

Things I have learned..... Unbutton everything - especially dress shirts. failure to do so might cause stress on the button and weakening the stitching. Which will lead the button to come off in the wash or popping off when you sneeze too hard at work. Especially if the quality of the shirt wasn't that great to begin with (I am looking at you Kohl's clothing).

Also.... Learning if you have hard water will help too. Hard water will truly make everything dingy.

And If you live somewhere you can't read the packaging.... That tells me you aren't creating a community where you live. Get to know your neighbors, join a church, or volunteer. Creating bonds with other people wherever you are.... Allows you to say things like "my poor husband keeps walking around with dingy clothes because I can't read the packaging.... What do you use?" You just have to put yourself out there.

RPW is a wonderful community, but I worry many women are living in a silo because they aren't putting in the work to create community in their non-digital lives.

I full time in an rv and have something similar to this since the commercial washers don't often work. Then I air dry the rest of the way. I have the larger faster spin dryer though. Look at the laundry tags. There's universal symbols on there. I'm pretty bad and mix fabrics and colors and have never had these issues. Even shein and cheap clothes don't break apart on me. If the sweaters have wool don't use heat at all. If you're shrinking items or having color bleeding heat is usually to blame. There's color grabber sheets to help eliminate it too. General tips:

Don't wash delicate fabrics without a delicates bag.

Dry on low to medium dryer heat unless bedding or denim. Too much dryer heat can shrink clothes.

Don't over dry/wash. I prefer to use delicate wash and dry setting for everything but denim/work clothes.

Don't wash newer colored clothing with lighter clothes unless using a color grabber sheet and cold water. If you can have separate loads for darks/colors and lights/whites.

The only thing I could think that's causing the arm sleeves to get bigger is them getting pulled on while wet. That could be from being mixed with too heavy of fabrics or from when you put in the dryer. Don't over fill the load to reduce risk of items getting pulled on.

Get a tide travel stick for food stains. Use it asap. It's easiest to get stains out asap vs after they've set.

Bleach for stains on white fabrics.

Full text: Quick explanation: Me and bf are long term travelers, we’ve lived in 4 different countries in the past year, we’ve moved 20-30 times in the past 3 for important context.

So, I keep destroying by boyfriends clothes in the laundry. He has started to buy what he calls ‘disposable t-shirts’, which are the cheapest basic tees he can wear once before it shrinks in the wash or comes out with the arm holes stretched 2x the original size.

White clothes turn grey or brown and I cannot work out how to remove stains. He gave up on buying sweaters because they come out of the machine in a boys size 10.

Now, we move very frequently and live in countries where I cant read the packaging. I have used all different types of machines, cheap, expensive, I’ve washed clothes in the shower. Ive tried every setting and a lot of powders.

So I’m asking (begging) for advice. What powders should i be using? What settings on the machine for which fabric? Am i supposed to be separating whites, colors, fabric types? Help

Woolite for everything! Dark woolite for darks, the one in the white bottle that says for colors for colors. Wash most clothes on cold. Underwear on warm!

Also, zip and button jeans or shorts or anything with a zipper and turn them inside out. That way they don’t ruin the other clothes!

Try your best to wash like colors and like fabrics together!

If you can, run a small scoop of tsp through your washing machine.

I also make the suggestion of running oxyclean (or similar) through your washing machine on occasion.

Hmmm here's some important differences in types of fabric.

Fabric weave

Wovens vs knits.

Wovens are not stretchy along the grain and thus can handle a lot more manual stress - eg wringing, tumbling, hanging up while sodden - will generally affect them much less. They hold their shape well, but also crease. This is what men's collared shirts and trousers are typically made from.

Knits are stretchy. Almost all clothes nowadays are knits. Whether they can handle heat is dependent on the fabric composition - but almost no knit can be wrung because it will cause too much stretching out of shape. Heavier knits will need to be dried flat to avoid its own soggy weight causing undesirable stretching.

Fabric composition

Polyester - synthetic material. Used in woven and knit fabrics. Doesn't normally shrink. The fabric can lose thickness with many washes though as it sheds fibers and will lose structure.

Spandex/lycra - normally used in a small percentage (2-5%) blended into other fibers (eg cotton) to add elasticity. Adversely affected by heat, excessive tension, and sunlight. When it's completely damaged you will see the spandex fibers poking out of the fabric in one area that undergoes lots of stretching (eg underarm, crotch, or any tight seam) and that area will have no more elasticity and be loose. This is normally the end of the useful life of the garment.

Cotton - can shrink a lot on the first wash (unavoidable, sign of poor quality - many fabrics are "pre-shrunk" before sewing for this reason) or can shrink a little with heat/expands a little in cold. Stretches/loses shape over time with moisture/tension. Generally straightforward and durable.

Rayon/viscose/acetate - not the most natural of natural fibres but is still technically natural. Treat it like cotton or linen.

Linen - tends to stretch out/get softer over time, unavoidable. Normally only comes in woven. Tends to crease.

Wool - natural fibre, normally knitted or felted. Tends to shrink whenever it gets wet, hot and agitated (eg in a tumble dryer). Treat with extreme caution, eg, I handwash with castile soap, then roll in a towel to wick moisture, then dry flat outside. Be even more cautious if felted - spot clean or dry clean only.

Silk - sensitive to heat, bleach and sunlight. Do not leave in the sun. Do not treat with bleach, it will dissolve/weaken it. I treat it the same as wool except I dry it inside. Tends to shrink in heat and expand in cold.

Colour Fastness

Whenever you buy a new garment that is a bright or dark colour - test its colour fastness by washing separately, by hand, in hot water (as hot as you can still comfortably hold your hand in it - obviously don't do this for wool/silk), with the detergent you normally use. If any colour bleeds out into the rinse water it is not colour fast and has to be separated. Most clothes are colour fast these days but you never know.

Machine Cycles

The washing machine will normally have a "delicates" cycle. Use this for thin, knit fabrics, anything with lace. Thicker/more durable fabrics, wovens and cotton/linen/polyester can handle the 'regular' cycle. Cotton, linen, rayon, polyester, can handle heat. Knits should not be spun at the highest speed.

Tumble dryer is best used for heavier/durable things like heavy woven fabrics, towels, cottons, etc.

Stains

The faster you get to them, the better they can be removed. Stains that have been through the wash and dried in the sun/heat without being removed are probably "set" and never going to come out (sorry). Get to them before they dry, and if they do dry, get to them before they get wet and dry again, and before they go near heat or sun. To find out what works on any one stain try googling the fabric composition and the stain material - eg "cotton blood stain" or "polyester oil stain". In general synthetics like polyester do not hold natural stains like dirt, blood, or grass whereas naturals like cotton or wool, do.

Unfortunately many fabrics are just weird these days. I buy second hand designer brands - for SO at least as he needs reliable shirts that withstand frequent washing. At which temperature do you wash the items? And if he buys “disposable shirts” he will ALWAYS GET disposable quality!
