One of my husband's male colleagues was in hospital with kidney stones. He was next to a woman who also had kidney stones. She said it was far worse than giving birth, and she was a mother.

The thing a lot of people don't realise is that kidney stones aren't smooth. Babies are.

I don't know why the "hah, we have to give birth, so when men suffer now they know what its like" mentality is so prevalent amongst women.

I think its something they like to pride themselves on.. how tough they must be to go through child birth, and how men can't possibly understand how painful it is, and so its good when we feel pain.

In reality, millions of women give birth every day. Whilst I'm sure it is incredibly painful, if the genders were switched, men would obviously be doing the same thing.

It's not as if we can't take any pain and would all be cowering, afraid of giving birth. People want kids, and if a woman wants a kid, she is going to have to go through child birth. If men had to give birth, it would be the same.

Honestly I just think that this sort of shit comes from the whole "girl power" and "women have always been oppressed" mentality. They see us as their oppressors and so when they have a chance to say "look, we're better than you", they take that chance to pat themselves on the back, even if they look insane.

Just look at Cosmo. Practically every week there is a list of "things women do better than men" that blathers on about how strong and emotionally aware women are, and how men can't multitask.

Btw, where did that ridiculous assertion that only women can multitask come from? It's just a flat out lie.

I don't....find this funny. If I was with my husband at the hospital and the nurse started poking fun at him being in pain, she would be shitting twice every day thereafter because I would rip her a new asshole. It isn't funny just because it involves a penis. Just unprofessional. Administering patient care is not the appropriate time to be a wise ass.

I were you, I'd make the following response to any professor, student or nurse who made that kind of statement:

"In fact, a woman I know named Sonja Newcombe told me one of her husband's male colleagues was in hospital with kidney stones. He was next to a woman who also had kidney stones. The female patient said it was far worse than giving birth, and she was a mother. And in any case, saying things like, 'Now you get to experience giving birth too!' or 'no sympathy' is extremely unprofessional and unacceptable as a health care professional. It does nothing to ease the pain of the patient or make them more comfortable, it shows a total lack of empathy with what the patient is going through. It is also sexist, in that you are shaming the patient for experiencing pain, and are telling them in essence, to 'man up'. You're telling the patient that the discomfort they are experiencing is of no relevance because they are a man and not a woman. That's only going to add to the patient's discomfort, and is thus professionally unacceptable."

I had a kidney stone last year. Passing the stone wasn't painful for me at all, but the pain in my kidney was one of the worst I have ever experienced. It felt like being stabbed. Like a stab that would take 15 minutes for the blade to enter, then get a 5 minute break, then another 15 minute stab.

When I say it was one of the most painful experiences of my life I would like to put that into context. I suffer from GERD. When you see this on TV it is some old person who goes to a hospital thinking they are having a heart attack, and they get all "Oh just a little heart burn I feel so silly now." In my case it is me having full body convulsions, my blood pressure spiking so high my doctors afraid I am going to have a stroke, and vomiting everywhere.

I also have trigeminal neuralgia. It has been dubbed the suicide disease because it is so painful a high percentage of people with it commit suicide. For me it feels like someone shoving a cattle prod onto the right side of my face. Also I learned from the below link that this disease might cause cluster headaches. I don't think I suffer from those, but I do get pretty bad migraines.

3 years ago I was mugged and beaten by 5 guys. They fucked my face up pretty good, and broke several of my ribs.

So when I say a kidney stone was one of the most painful experiences of my life I mean REALLY painful. I would rather be beaten up again.

I agree, a letter of complaint to her superior, asking that no action be taken except that the nurse in question consider the appropriateness of future comments should cause no harm to anyone and stop her and her colleagues from taking male issues so lightly in the future.

A more proper analogy would exist if instead of giving birth to a baby you gave birth to a baby-sized jagged stone, without those convenient natural painkillers.

For some reason it's very important to many women that no matter what they have it worse in every possible way.

So it can't simply be that this guy is suffering. She has to be suffering significantly worse for it to be acceptable to even discuss his pain.

I'm not sure why this is. Victim-culture that has been beaten in to women from day one by feminists in education and the media perhaps?

I appreciate all sorts of humor, and I do mean all sorts. I don't find this funny either because when you're in pain, you have other things to worry about than wondering if your nurse will help you or just stand there and make fun of you (and also that you came to her for help that she's expected to be giving you and she's brushing you off).

But that might also be because when I'm in big pain, I lose all patience and turn sadistic :P

I have a few things to say.

When I read the title of this post I thought I was going to be linked to a sexy story about a lady nurse giving a prostate massage.
Some guys like ball abuse, some guys only like ball abuse from certain people.
Trying to take the mind off the pain of a kidney stone patient is important, but if it's anything like my kidney stones... Just shut the hell up and give me pain killers, I don't give a good god damn what you think.
Physical issues affect both men and women. There are some women with a prostate, there are some men with wombs. I do wish that people would remember this.
I just wanted to reiterate, passing a kidney stone is a painful process and it's important to administer pain relief as quickly as possible.
