In western countries you aren't going to get them. You are assumed to be a pedophile for liking children (even though pedophiles make up such a small percentage of the population.) I don't even want to get started on the number of females having "relationships" with children. If you wish to be an elementary teacher work in Asia. Parents still trust you. Also, there is not this pedophilia hysteria. P.S. I work in Korea as an elementary school teacher.

When my female friend who is a teacher told me it was illegal for me to set up security cameras in a classroom I knew I would never, ever be a teacher. Even though I'd be a pretty good one from what she says. I don't want kids, and I'm single... yea. Not a good mix with out proof.

Overall a nice article. One thing I am confused about though. He says that less than 15% of teachers are black, but I looked at the US census website and the American black population is 13%, so how is that an unexpected or unfair thing? Am I just reading it wrong?

My coolest teachers ever were all men. My coolest female teachers were friends with my cool male teachers. There's a totally different kind of candor and usually a more open-ended line of discussion, probably thanks to gender roles in society and men being expected to give it to you straight.

Really irks me when they talk about diversity. So almost 15% of teachers are black but blacks account for under 12% of the population. Where are all these extra people going to come from and what's a "balanced" diversity number?

False equivalence. Blacks are 12.9% of the population so this number makes perfect sense. Males, however, make up 49% of the population.

Several years ago my brother entered a teaching program. Like me, however, he tends to have a solemn visage. For this reason, and this reason alone, he was kicked out of the program. He was told he could not teach because his face was not suitable. To me this smacks of bigotry and intolerance, and helps to explain why more men do not become grade school teachers: they can't get past the sexist feminist gatekeepers who demand that men in general, and grade school teachers in particular, become more feminine.

I had male teachers in third and fourth grade. They were awful. The reason women should be elementary school teachers is because they are better at it. Sorry, true.

BTW, if you are a male elementary school teacher, the first thing people think is either you are gay or a pedo or both. (And a low-paid one at that).

Every time I read the replies to these articles about the need of male teachers in the system, my heart dies a little a bit more . Today is "you ain't gonna get them". Last time was some dull stateless-capitalist (a.k.a., wrongly, as "libertarian") saying that since men are biologically less driven to choose teaching, then nothing should be done.
