Well... my Gen x generation is not afraid to talk to people while younger are. Younger generations seem to be afraid to even talk to the person standing in line at the store when us gen xers will talk to anyone.

Heck even kids today barley go outside living on TV, phones tablets and video games.

We lived outside. Obesity is an issue today and dont think social skills dont play any part as they dont leave the house or get off the net.

Had a cool conversation with an older coworker yesterday. Dude was really engaging and charismatic, and also convinced Alzheimer’s Disease is caused by “your brain being dehydrated”.

Gen X will talk about anything that pops in their heads.

When people discuss social skills, they do not just mean the intersubjectivity of it. They mean the ability to establish and create coexistent social bonds in the healthiest way to which the body is currently adapted on the macro scale. Yes, technology interferes with that.

Social etiquette hasn't changed fundamentally at all. It seems millennials, having pioneered technology in many ways (mainly social media), have decided to forgo traditional interaction in favor of online interaction, a trait i've not found to be common in the successors to millennials (Generation Zeta).

Perhaps it is millennials admiration for technology. They love it so much, it is their child. Yet they love it to fault, using it to the point of detriment. GenZeta, however, having grown up in their technology and knowing it like the back of their hand, understands where tech is useful and useless, if not adverse.

This is why trying to describe Millennial tendencies as new social etiquette is a misnomer. They are an anomaly. They chose to act a certain way due to the extremely rare social setting of their upbringings. GenZeta is very unlike them, already I've seen the workings of a counterculture movement that will likely reach its head as Zeta culture reaches the mainstream this decade.

This so called millennial new social etiquette will cease to exist soon enough. They'll just be the new boomers, sad and miserable, unable to understand why the world went the way it did.

Everyone has their own personal values and with each subsequent generation the standard for what is deemed acceptable or the norm has shifted. A few generations ago if you said your wife had a full time job or that you were a stay at home father it raised significantly more eyebrows than it does now. Another semi-related example is how we view and discuss employment. Baby boomers often hold drastically different views in employment. They think you should be loyal to the company which has drastically shifted to the norm of asking what the company can do for us now. I had an uncle who's genx and worked for several major tech companies when I visited with him last he had switched companies so I asked what prompted the move from Lyft to Google (not actual companies). He comfortably but somewhat awkwardly said well lyft downsized and I got laid off and then went on to say what he was now doing for google. The baby boomer family relatives were shocked we openly and casually discussed the realities of employment. one of them actually said to me "I would have never asked why he changed jobs that's just something we would never do before." That was a completely foreign thought to me.

My MIL leaves these useless answerphone messages, like "I called but you weren't there, I'll try again later." She says it's polite. I say it's the absolute opposite, total pain to make me listen to a message which I knew anyway from the missed call. I don't think we'll ever agree on that!

As a gen x member, I have watched society’s social skills plummet over my lifetime. My grandparents lived in a really social world where people treated each other very well. When I went back to visit, the whole town would take us in. We were invited to sports games, every neighbor and cousin would invite us over. Church activities were every weekend. It was really a different world.

The boomer generation and gen x moved around a lot, so you saw a deterioration in community, but my generation still spent all day outside with friends.

My oldest children, late millennial, had phones but only later in life and the phones were limited in their abilities, so they still went out and made friends.

It is really the latest genz kids, my two youngest, who grew up with smart phones and social media. And a huge number of these kids have serious social limitations. It is like pulling teeth to get my own daughters out and active with friends, and some of their classmates can barely carry on a conversation. You see their social media posts crying out about having no friends, not being able to get a girlfriend. Etc. it is really a problem. I think smart phones and social media have proven to be very harmful.
