There's a female at work who compliments me a lot. She always notices my clothes/shoes/haircut and says how much she likes it. Now, she is married, so I don't really take it that seriously, but it honestly makes me feel great.

I really don’t know what to do when I have a son.

I grew up never getting compliments except from the occasional girl who sent her friends to tell me she liked me. Once a girl complimented me face to face, I think I’ll always remember that. I worry if I compliment my future son he’ll grow up emotionally depend much like many girls are for their looks. I don’t think I’ve met a single women who could just look in the mirror and not need any kind of compliment.

I know women aren’t attracted to men who look in the mirror and expect compliments or get upset.

How to raise a boy without making him lose his chances of finding someone to love and how do I raise him without making him emotionally cold.

This is cute and sweet yes, but also a slippery slope because it tends to drive people, both men and women, into compulsive validation-seeking behaviours.

Compliments are nice but never ever live off external validation.

When I met my bf, his self esteem was negative, he was hunched over to try to hide himself and generally just didn't like himself. Now, I compliment people A LOT. And the change I saw in him over the years of me pretty much constantly telling him how much I like his clothes and hair and those long lanky legs he has and his scent and smile and whatever I see that day... it was miraculous almost. He blossomed. His posture is better, he believes in himself more. It's so important to compliment, esp men, they need it

This is a safe space, so I’ll admit it here. But goddam do some men need compliments now and then.

Self love is good and all, but validation is also a necessity sometimes.

If a see a dude in a suit, please tell him he looks sharp. Or at the very least, offer him tips.

Honestly I didn't realize not complimenting men wasn't a thing as a woman. I've done it my whole life. And now I'm 51 and a single mom and am thinking do my younger guy friends think I'm hitting on them lol. Joking. But if they look good in a shirt, got a fresh shave, why not compliment? I don't often get them, so i do feel good when it happens. So why not pass that on to others?

Feminists are fighting for equal rights that they already have for the most part. Bodily autonomy, equal pay, etc.

But what are we fighting for? Compliments. Thats it. Literally just tell us we look nice every once in a while.

In other words, while feminists are bitching about not having rights that they do, we're still working on being treated decently.

Fucking this, it's why I started to dress up normally, like trilby (I have the facial build for them(honest lol)), dress shirt with folded cuffs ironed, vest, dress pants, dress shoes, and tie. I'd go to college classes like that. The store, parties, anywhere.

And I got a few compliments, and it felt nice, sure some dudebros would be you look like a busker or a dweeb. But they look scruff in snapbacks and sweaters well in need of replacement, jeans with rips and tears.

Like compliment outfits on guy friends, I did it for my bf when he looked cute which is a bit easier since relationship. But even your buddies, he gets a new shirt or fresh hat, tell him you like it.

This has just been a habit of my wife and I since our older toddler was old enough to have his own opinion on clothes and while we started make him more compliant with getting dressed in mornings it turned into something we just clearly knew made him happy.

Still to this day after we get him into outfits in the morning either myself or my wife tell him how handsome he looks and we tell him to "go show momma/dadda how handsome you are!" and he excitedly runs over to show off.

There are some things you have to do differently when it's boys vs girls for children but making them confident is universal and is your job as their parent to reinforce the good.

I like aloha shirts. I know an aloha shirt and cargo shorts says something about me, but I don't care. Every time I see someone else wearing a cool aloha shirt I make sure to let them know! It's one of the few bright things that dudes get to wear!

Thank you for helping to raise your two children with equal respect for themselves, and their appearance. There are some gendered differences that are hardwired but humans are some of the least sexually dimorphic of any primates or even more mammals. There is no reason for all humans to not be equal as far as self-respect and confidence in what they look like. I appreciate your being a good parent!

As i was reading the comments a thought occurred (a rare event, indeed lol). I agree that its sad that we men get so few compliments. However, I'd like to remind us all, myself included, that sometimes injustices can be our greatest ally. A muscle doesnt get stronger without resistance. And we are stronger and better because of the way society treats us.
