The manipulative language is subtle at first. She mentions that Depp was found "guilty." You aren't found guilty or not guilty in a civil case. The rest, she kind of basks in Depp's disheveled look while poking fun of his acting. Depp recently got out of, by all accounts, a really abusive relationship. While she was physically abusive, she was mainly really psychologically abusive. The author is basically getting off that a man suffered psychological abuse at the hands of a woman. She even goes at length to defend this view by saying he's a man who made his choices. Why can't women seem to empathize with men? There seems to be a block.

The author opens by shaming Depp for growing old then continues with ostrich-head-in-the-sand act by completely ignoring all the audio recordings of Heard's abusive threats towards Johnny in private.

Polanski is convicted and I've never seen anything to say he was innocent. But putting him in the same line as one guy who was investigated and cleared and another guy who won damages for being accused is pretty dumb.

there's a big difference between Depp, Allen, and Polanski

Depp was proven in a court of law to have been victimized by Heard, Allen has never been credibly accused of anything, and Polanski fled the country AFTER being found guilty of druggin and raping a child.

I don't remember exactly when it was (so I obviously don't know the issue), but I remember reading a TIME article some years back decrying meritocracy, due process, and free expression- you know, the fundamental bedrock of a democratic government AND a democratic society- as being objectionable. Not just claiming "these things open to the door to forms of abuse that wouldn't be possible if they were restricted", but "these things are bad, full stop".

I lost all respect for the publication then and there. More bigoted prattling on their part doesn't surprise me at all.

Could I also point out that this authour does not criticise the female character in the film owning a black boy. Justified by saying that she looks after him well.

I don't think she's comparing him to Polanski or Allen, more or less using them as examples of artists who induce conflicting feelings in those who admire their work.

I also don't think she's condemning Depp. She says in the article that two things can be true which I agree with. We can acknowledge that he was largely the victim during his relationship with Heard while also acknowledging his toxic behaviors (drugs & alcohol).

That said, wtf is the point of this article? It reads like a short op-ed whose sole purpose is to drag JD and shame him. She even attacks his looks which is crazy because if a male columnist wrote this shit about a woman Twitter would lose its fucking mind. This type of shit belongs on Page Six not Time Magazine. Someone on the editorial staff must be friends with AH.
