Patriarchy

OK. Let's go through the life of a boy being born male in the good ol' US of A.

Welcome to the world, little guy. For all its faults, I still believe it's a wonderful place to be, with much happiness and good to be found.

Anyway, within the first few days of your life, you're likely to be strapped to a table and have your genitals mutilated. 58.3% of newborn baby boys are still being circumcised in the United States, which is astounding in 2023, seeing as the barbaric practice was outlawed in 1996 for girls.

During the first few months of your life, you're more likely to die of SIDS than your female counterparts. This is largely attributable to the fact that neonatal circumcision has been linked to an increased risk of SIDS, which just goes to show that some parents would prefer a dead baby boy to a baby boy with unmutilated genitals.

So, let's say you reach the "safe point" of your life. Of course most boys do. You may expect it to be smooth sailing from here, but unfortunately, during your early key developmental years, you are more likely to be abused and/or neglected than girls. Since boys who are abused or neglected are four times more likely to engage in delinquent behavior, it's likely going to have a fairly significant impact on you. Sorry.

Well, anyway, that patriarchy we've heard so much about should kick in some time, right? Unfortunately, it won't be school. Boys get graded more harshly than girls for handing in the same work. This research was conducted over 60 countries. Not only in grading, but even when both boys and girls misbehave at the same rates, boys get punished disproportionately for it. Since 75% of K-12 and 90% of elementary school teachers are women, it's not surprising that there would be bias like this.

As you reach puberty, it's not quite smooth sailing ahead yet. Adolescent boys are 2-4 times more likely to commit suicide than adolescent girls. Perhaps this can all be linked to the aforementioned genital mutilation, child abuse, unfair treatment, and poorer academic achievement in boys. But around this point, you may find it odd that most conversations about mental health seem to be highly gynocentric.

Upon graduating high school, you may feel inclined to go to university. Great! But unfortunately the scale is yet again tipped in women's favor. 59% of college students on American campuses are women. Around this time, you may see these statistics, but also encounter numerous movements to increase girls' academic achievement, notably in high-income fields. You'll hear it again and again "The STEM Gap." They'll talk about closing the gap between boys and girls in education, as if girls have no advantages and boys have all of them.

So, maybe you realize that college is a lost cause. Time to get to work, right? Well, since men are over 10 times more likely to be killed on the job, I guess that's just another feather in the hat of being a privileged male.

I could go on. Divorce rape. False accusation likelihood. Odds of being murdered. Male health issue funding (prostate cancer vs. breast cancer, for example). Equal domestic violence victimization rates, nearly zero resources. But I think you get the message.

Bask in the patriarchy, gentlemen. It's all around us ... somehow.

The patriarchy construct does two things. 1. Provides a framework for establishing women as victims for all problems which befall women. They try to extend this construct to men as well, but it fails when men seek redress and are told either their problems are not as bad as they think or “women have it worse” and therefore women need to be prioritized. 2. Here’s the really slick part of patriarchy: when men have legitimate issues, women and feminists conveniently wash their hands of any responsibility to fix it by saying men are the most privileged people on the planet. Therefore if men have any problems and are powerless to fix them due to the privilege conferred upon them by the so-called patriarchy, then they are problems they deserve to have.

Bottom line, it’s an unprovable construct that disarms the less informed anti-feminists and gives women a free pass on accountability.

It's funny how 2-3% of men being in extremely privileged conditions is indisputable "proof" of the existence of "patriarchy", but if more than 50% of men live in worse conditions than women in things like housing, work, education, health, safety, social assistance and protection of the law, it means nothing.

The biggest hole in patriarchy theory is that over 10,000 years of human history and seven separately evolved civilizations, women never revolted against this so-called oppression.

There is also the fact that men have by and large sacrificed themselves for and subsidized women throughout history. Men have had to do all strenuous and dangerous labor. Men have been more frequently homeless, incarcerated and conscripted. Since when do dominant groups do that? Did European slaveholders subsidize their African slaves and sacrifice themselves for them? Did European slaveholders do the dangerous jobs so the slaves didn't have to? It makes no sense.

Sex is controlled by women in 95%. Economy is controlled by women in 80%. Most men wake up every morning to serve women and family. And it's beyond ridiculous how minimal in every way a man's life can be if he chooses to not have a woman in his life. Societies over thousands of years have been matriarchal. Women and children first, brave men die first (war propoganda) etc. Anyone who says patriarchy exists can't think for themselves.

It's called patriarchal theory, and it falls apart under very little scrutiny. I won't deny that western society has had and still has some patriarchal elements to it, but the oversimplification that it's basically the way the world has always worked and still does, its sickening and a horrible thing to teach young men, or anyone for that matter.

Patriarchy theory is a creation of those women least able to empathise with the male condition. As such their only resort was projecting their own failings and inadequacies onto men collectively. It serves only as a primer on how things would work were they running the show.

When I hear people describe patriarchy, it's clear that they are confusing it with oligarchy. The oligarchs don't care about gender, they only care about power and money.

Ya, but there is a Patriarchy. It consists of democracy, capitalism, the rule of law, morality and liberal values. These are what feminism is fighting against.

Karen Straughan puts it well.

Large "P" "Patriarchy" is the name the feminists give to the world we live in. Completely made up. A world in which men oppress women and use the force, the law, and allocation of resources to exploit them.

Small "p" "patriarchy" just describes a manner of social organization in which men are the typical holders of overt/official power. We do live in small p "patriarchy", but that doesn't at all mean that it is unfair to women. Indeed, society is organized for the benefit of women and then children. The laws that men are accountable to observe and enforce ensure that women have to suffer as minimally as necessary.
