What does the 80/20 rule?

It’s a statistic from OkCupid that stated women on the app only approved of 20% of men. Therefore the conclusion made is that women only find 20% of men attractive. Recent statistics are actually even more skewed for certain dating apps with women finding even less than 20% of men’s profiles attractive. The numbers are probably off a little, but I believe the Tinder stat was women only swipe right on 6% of men and match with 30% of those men. Which, if correct, means women only match with a little less than 2% of men.

But I do think there is some nuance to it. A man could be attractive but have a bad profile. How much that affects the stats, I have no idea.

At this point the 80/20 rule is just shorthand for inequality. There's no need to be pedantic about the actually distribution.

Do you agree that there is such a thing as attraction inequality, or sex inequality, just as there is wealth inequality? If yes, then great. The default assumption is that there is a 80/20 distribution, but really it doesn't matter. Maybe the actual distribution is 70/30 or 90/10. So what? Doesn't change the bigger picture.

As other comment stated: it comes from OKCupid studies and this is just pareto principle in action about "winners take all". On that website 20% of men were getting 80% of matches. There was another 80% there, where 80% of guys were rated below 3/5, which should right in the middle average score.

Sometimes it's 80% of women are attracted to 20% of men.

Those people are wrong, 100% of women are interested in top guys, just bottom 20% don't get the chance to try.
