Of course it does: It shows her you actually want her and have the balls to make a move.

As long as you laugh it off and show that it doesn't matter to you, it's not a bad thing in any way.

Just try again after a while, or tease her by pretending you're about to in an exaggerated fashion, or go for her cheek next time, and keep going until you get there

The only way this can be a bad thing is if you let it become awkward and/or start apologizing.

If she agrees to see you again, it's 100% on because she knows your intentions and still wants to see you again.

If she doesn't agree to see you again, then then you aren't going to recover from it.

I'd say the bet way to handle it is exactly how you did. Laugh it off. Poke fun at yourself in a witty way throughout the night about it. Don't make it a constant topic of conversation, but be open about it. Chick's love clever self-humility, and the evening could easily be turned around.

Going for a kiss (or any other escalation) too soon does not hurt your chances with the girl, and you probably get points for boldness. There are no absolutes in human interaction, but I don't feel guilty saying it's never going to cause problems (though you may already have problems with the girl that are incurable).

As rubygeek said, as long as you don't care that she deflected the kiss, then it doesn't matter.

Some random tips:

Make sure she knows, or at least has some inkling, you're going for the kiss so she isn't completely surprised by it. Many options for this The triangle eye thing (eyes, lips, eyes, lips, while talking closely), say "I'm going to kiss you.", or do one of the kiss gambits that indirect gamers love, always be escalating so you already have some closeness and contact going on, etc.
Never take it seriously. If she looks away, gives you the cheek, whatever, it doesn't matter. Smirk, raise an eyebrow, quizzically say "No?", whatever to indicate you misjudged her. Don't apologize. Don't make excuses, or try to play it off as something else.
Try again later, after building more attraction, or eject. Either you are able to build some attraction with this girl or you're not. If you're not, don't waste your time or hers.

Going for the kiss = wins every time, even when it loses. I betcha this girl is more attracted to you for the simple fact you went for it, rather than sat there like a little pansy thinking about how you "want" to kiss her.

How did she reject you? Verbally or physically? If it was verbal, what was her body language?

It is eminently recoverable if there is attraction. Sometimes, kcs fail because there isn't any, or enough. Look for attraction and chemistry, try again. If she's spending more time with you, then the game is still on.

One thing I try to remember when it comes to women is their 'fuse' is just a little bit longer than mens (in terms of how much arousal before action). If you wait out on kissing her til just a little bit later, she'll be the one trying to kiss you.

For future success, attempt to build up the sexual tension a bit before moving in. A little trick I've picked up is "telling her a secret". Whisper a joke or something naughty in her ear, making sure that as you exhale it is on her neck or in her ear.

When you go in for the kiss a few minutes later (after doing the whole lip-eye-contact thing) she'll be much more into it.
