What did you expect wearing a top hat? Unless you legitimately like the fashion, or are a hipster or something, then you are doing it for attention, right? If you are, I'm not judging you, just saying that you should expect it. You can scold someone who does that, but do it in a playful way. It's like you are peacocking and then getting upset when it works too well... :)

You were asking for it with the top hat. It doesn't excuse the misbehavior, but you were attracting that kind of attention. It's a college town, so don't be surprised if some people mature more slowly than others.

A tip: if your standards of behavior are above this, don't sarge drinking establishments. During the day, with people who aren't drunk, the worst you have to deal with is a girl pretending she didn't hear you... or a security guard, if you really blow it. The other side of the coin is that you have to be more interesting. Are you up for the challenge?

Are you really expecting to find women with fantastic conversational skills in a club where most people are going to be drunk? If the women there are boring you, modify your selection bias and start picking up elsewhere. Most people in a club are there for some messy fun, not deep, thought-provoking conversation.

To answer your question, I reckon I can have a good conversation with around 20% of women. When I say good conversation, I mean one I can enjoy. A higher percentage than this can talk to me OK, it's just I don't click with them at all.

I hunt-and-peck for girls at the bar. I might approach a number of girls, but I'm only really interested in meeting a few, usually. I just look for girls I'm attracted to who seem like they'd vibe well with me. Sometimes there's 20 girls and I'm considering all of em- sometimes there's zero.

Don't let anyone here bitch you out about the hat. Peacocking works. The guys who bitch you out about it have NEVER EVEN TRIED IT because they think it's too weird/try-hard (they're insecure). The girls who approach you might be less "classy," and if you find that to be the case, just go approach the more classy ones. In my experience, a whole range of different girls will notice it and want to mess around with it- not just the less "classy" ones.
