You had one thing going for you: you had something better to do than hit on women. You were watching the game. So women wondered to themselves, why aren't you hitting on me, like all the other guys? You became a challenge.

This is quite different than the usual bar action, where guys often end up on "Death Row." that's the spot along a wall or by the bar where all the chumps stand around in a line, nursing their drinks, and staring at women, but to afraid to approach.

I've had a lot of success with this.

The first time I noticed it I was actually doing a cultural anthropology project and so I was sitting in the back corner of a bar with a notepad and pen.

Got 3 free drinks, a phone number, a Facebook invite (different person), and a gay guy hitting on me.

While others here have good points I think the key to it all is this:

I made people curious.

I'm average looks and average height.

Nope. I go to a bar alone all the time and not once have I been hit on. Or even have girls come sit by me. It must be nice being approachable

If I want to hook up with someone I usually go out alone and rarely failed to get picked up by women when doing this. I found out about this when I was stood up by a tinder date and thought to myself "fuck it, I'll have a good time anyway." It's a bit awkward the first minutes there, but usually I'm being hit on within 10 minutes. Girls are no less predators than men in clubs and I think it's easier for them to move in on someone who's not with a lot of people.

It's a lot of fun and a self confidence booster like nothing else. I do think you need to look above average to pull this off though, but look cool and confident and you are above average no matter what you look like. I mean, look around a club from a womans perspective - men are often too drunk, sweaty, don't know how to dress and act like kids. There are more good looking girls than guys in clubs. Especially here in Oslo.

Man, what the hell? Whenever I go to a bar it's 75% guys, and the few girls there are with their boyfriends. On any given night there MIGHT be one or two girls who look approachable. Even then, that doesn't mean I won't lose interest 30 seconds into a conversation with them.

It seems like you're a guy who have his shit together. And women can feel it just but your presence. This is something that fascinates me, and also something we can't fake. Don't wanna sound jealous, but I wish I was like you, although my social background hasn't lead me to this. Many guys, including myself, do not have this advantage and we have to work hard for it. I've tried to go out solo a couple of times. Never worked because my anxiety quickly gets at me when I'm alone. Some may say I try too much, but what choices do I have? Sit and wait for girls to come at me? I definitely do not fall into this category judging by my experiences so far. People do not realize it and give some shitty mainstream advice like ''be yourself'', ''be confident'', when in reality it doesn't help at all for someone who have been socially awkward his whole life. So the self part, we can skip on that. Be confident? This is a process, not something we can acquire over night. Advice focusing on the process rather that the goal would be much more appreciated. I still have a lot to learn but I will definitely go out solo again and see what happens.

Lot's of guys go to the bar alone and don't talk to ANY girls. I find it much easier to approach girls when I'm walking over from a group of my friends. There are some cocksmen out there who prefer going solo because other people just get in the way, but being with a fun, happening group generally gives you the best odds of success.

I'm always surprised how often people will chat me up at a bar if I'm alone. They key though is you need to get a seat so when they come up to get a drink, or sit down, the conversation is easy.

If it's standing room only forget it.

I'm 5'9 and average looking at best. Maybe a 6/10.

I like this because you don't go out and try to hit on 10s and F-Close, but you're doing something you enjoy, so HBs get confused and think "why isn't he hitting on me", so they try to approach.

I plan to do this when I'm 21.

I always have the most success when I go to a bar alone and don't try too hard. Just buy a drink and make conversation with people at the bar, passing by, or walking up to buy a drink. That's really all there is to it. It's one of the few things in life that works almost exactly like it does in the movies.

For some reason, I almost never have any success when I go out to a bar with friends.
