Why is it performative? Think about it like buying a car. If you want a better deal, do you just pay whatever the seller asks or will you say: 'Wow, what a gorgeous car! I love the wheels, it’s in perfect condition, and it’s exactly the color I wanted!'?

Of course not, that will only increase the price. You pretend you’re not that interested.
