Why do some people get angry when a man or a woman talk about being a stay at home mom?

I honestly don't get it. One of my friends gets so pissed off with me not being career driven and wanting to be a stay at home mom(if we have kids). Hell I'd be a stay at home puppy mom now if I could.

I have a theory that for some ppl if you want different from them or are living different it's somehow an attack on them and/or they think you want them to be the same.

Have the women in John’s family gone through or witnessed a situation in which being a sahm turned out badly? Maybe they’re coming from a place of concern? It is scary to be financially reliant on another person.

Is John’s family aware of his financial standing? If so, maybe they’re confused as to how the situation would work and feel sorry that they may be getting themselves into financial distress.

Maybe John’s family knows in this economy, her dreams of being a sahm mom may not work, so they feel bad.

Lastly - maybe (as you’re subtly implying here) they’re just kinda illogically judgmental (as some here seem to think women with jobs are). In that case, this shouldn’t affect John and Jane’s future plans as they should be confident they can make their life work best.

Usually if I see this its because older women doubt the man will be loyal to her and there could be consequences to his actions like another child out of wedlock.

And as a sahw you have no way to get out of it unless you divorce and have no marketable job skills. So the sahw just has to put up with it.

Its basically a he is calling alllllll the shots, and you just have to put up with it. Because what are you going to do…. Leave? Really? If he want to cheat, he can, wants to do no chores, he can, want to go hang out with friends, he can. There is literally nothing to stop him from doing whatever he wants because she can’t leave.

It’s pessimistic but I think that is why. Being a sahw is risky. Just as being a sahd or sahh would be.

I have never seen this scenario play out nor heard stories about this type of situation. Maybe in internet debates I hear people debating the risks of forgoing your career to be a stay at home mom, but no one has ever been rude to a stay at home mom in real life like that.

Usually when people get angry about it, it's because either the SAHM or her partner is implying it's better in some way, or because they believe it is the wrong choice for the couple of they can't afford it. People do tend to get pretty holier than thou about being SAHMs ("do you want your children to be raised by strangers").

It's a tough one. As a woman who was a SAHM and ultimately ended up very vulnerable and in a very difficult situation including multiple forms of abuse, I couldn't in all honesty recommend it. However, I don't understand being angry about it. If it works for them it works and I wish them well!

Because it’s a dangerous and dumb situation to put yourself in. Jane will be completely at the mercy of John’s continuing fidelity and his ability to hold down a job. Never mind the fact that households can’t even pay rent or service a mortgage on a single wage these days.
