I don't believe there is a significant difference in amount of non-consent contact. I think men and women are taught to frame it differently. Most of the guys I know, once you get to know them, have a few stories of being groped and harrassed and stalked, by older and younger women. But they don't call it that. They tell a 'funny' story about escaping out the window of the bathroom at a party because a drunk girl wouldn't leave them alone. They 'joke' about how hard it is to do manual labour as a job in public because old ladies think it's fine to grab ass and arms and make sexual comments. But ask them if they've been "sexaully assulted"? Fuck no, they were fine, they 'knew' nothing would happen, etc etc.

Ask a man who has had his pants ripped off by a group of women if he's ever been sexually harrassed and he'll say no. Ask a woman who was kissed once without permission if she's been brutally assaulted and she'll say yes. It's a difference of framing, not of behaviour. Until we start using overly emotional language and demanding support and feelings over it, they will not see our assult they same way they see their own.

At what point would a man think of himself as too intoxicated to consent? Because I'd bet it's a lot higher of a bar to clear than for a woman, if that bar even exists for a given man. That seems to be most of the discrepancy here.

I think the definition of "sexual assault" has been broadened to the point where it's meaningless. Everything from forcible intercourse to putting your hand on someone's knee can be considered "sexual assault" now, which IMO should be offensive to actual rape victims.

And what's worse is that these definitions seem to only apply to men. Briefly touching someone (without their "explicit and enthusiastic" consent) is still, AFAIK, one of the ways a woman will flirt with a man. And it's considered perfectly acceptable. But if a man does that during, say, a casual conversation, and a woman decides that she doesn't like it, it can be considered SA.

On a separate issue, being the victim of forced sexual intercourse 50% more often (0.6% to 0.4%), is not necessarily irrelevant. I get it -we're talking about numbers of respondents that can be counted on the fingers of one hand, and thus not statistically significant. But I don't think it should be dismissed out of hand, and it deserves further study.

Actually, what bothers me here is that OP refers to the fact that women are significantly overrepresented in this study, but the fact that the ratio of women in higher education is 60%, while in this study's sample it rises to 72%. What I find strange is constructing a sample with such a disproportionate number of women compared to men. I don't see the logic. Why not construct a sample with 50% men and 50% women?

My sister showed me a video by a feminist on TikTok who was crashing out over a woman who was raped, and using it to paint all men as vicious monsters. She said something along the lines of "this is why I'm afraid of getting into a bad situation when I go to the club or the bar" and I was just flabbergasted. Clubs and bars are places with a very sexually-charged atmosphere and serve substances that impair your judgement and awareness. Why are you even going there in the first place if you're so afraid of getting assaulted by strangers? I don't go to clubs or bars, and I don't know any men who do. I imagine a significant amount of them are douchebags who go there solely to try to pick up drunk girls. It seems to me that the most vocal and toxic feminists also tend to be the biggest party animals, and they base their opinion of men entirely off of the douchebags they encounter in these places. I'm not blaming these women for these experiences, but it would be nice if they understood that the social dynamics and risks at parties are very different from everyday life.

I think this can most likely be easily explained by the dynamics we have in dating.

Men have a lot of pressure to initiate romance, men are expected to take the lead in how a relationship develops, men are expected to be the ones who initiate physical contact (kissing, touching, etc.) ... and then there is the sparse, unreliable information men have on how to behave in such a situation "Be confident, don't show fear, be manly, be assertive" all these are things that factually work overwhelmingly well on the majority of women when it comes to making them sexually interested in a man.

Understanding this, it's really not hard to derive why men are so much more likely to initiate unwanted physical contact. We talk, we vibe, I misread the room and go for a kiss BOOM she did not view the situation like this at all and was thinking we're just having a nice conversation.

Not trying to "paint most rape as incidental", but I'm sure A LOT of the imbalance on these statistics is rooted in the fact that women never have to behave risky to get laid. 0 pressure on women, full pressure on men. [women will tell you there is lots of pressure on them, but men know that's complete bullshit and their pressure is entirely internal whereas men's is external]. They just wait for someone attractive to show up and odds are that person wants to fuck them anyway but they still don't need to take a chance on going for initiating that sex, that's still on the man.

So really, it's to be completely expected that men cause more unwanted contact than women. And it's undeniably women who are putting that pressure on men. Since men who abstain from trying will die alone, while women can coast their entire lifes without ever having to make a move on someone they're not sure appreciates it. Or trying to navigate vague guidelines like "be assertive" and interpret them correctly with all it's caveats and the skill of correctly reading a person who may be completely terrible at [verbally and non verbally] communicating their [lack of] interest.

Frankly, women could change this by starting to hold up their end of the equality deal and take off some of that burden off men. But I mean ... we can clearly see that women have entirely no interest in equality when it's coming for their privilege.
