I've thought about this for a while because protected (physically and mentally) is extremely important as a woman. I'm going to give some examples of actually being protected vs "gentleman behaviors" which can be easily mistaken.

Actually being protected:e.g #1 Me and my dad (who is a HVM) go on walks. On one part of the hike, the sidewalk and road are connected (so there is no step up from the sidewalk). He ALWAYS moves towards the road side while I'm in the inner part. It's a very small thing but it makes me feel like he protects mee.g. #2 Whenever my brother drops me off somewhere (especially at night) he always makes sure I make it to the door, texts me asking if I made it and waits for my reply.

Not being protected:e.g. #1 LVM ex and I were on the NYC subway when a crazy guy was inside of the cart. I felt extremely uncomfortable so I told him that in the next stop we're going to change subway carts. He immediately starts making fun of me and says that its alright that it happens and that we're staying on. Well in the next stop I left him while he reluctantly followed me ,e.g #2 LVM ex and I were walking in a super sketchy and dark neighborhood and I had to be the one who initiates that we leave. He also reluctantly followed.

What confused me about the LVM ex was that he displayed a lot of "gentleman behaviors" early on like opening my side of the car door, holding the door open for me, thanking waiters and waitresses (aka on AskReddit "what is one red flag that you see") but he SEVERELY LACKED situational awareness. At the end of the day, I didn't feel safe with him and felt like he was never looking out for me.

Please let me know if ya'll have encountered this.
