is there no thought so unseemly in its bad character that a woman will NOT set to paper?

I'm all for marriage. I've spent the last five years working for everyone's right to marriage. Being married has been one of the greatest joys of my life, but we had exactly one guest plus the officiant at our wedding, and seven years later, I have pretty much the happiest marriage of anyone I know, with the possible exception of our one wedding guest.

However, I still felt the need to fulfill the fantasy, so a year after exchanging vows, we had a big reception for 125 of our closest family and friends. No band, no DJ, no cake, just a nice dinner with an open bar, and I did wear a wedding dress, because I knew it would be my one and only chance. It was fine, but if I'm being honest, there were better ways to spend $15,000.

So she gets married in some sort of tiny lame ceremony and feels so horrible about it that she needed to spend 15000$ on a fake wedding a year later? But that fake wedding wasn't even good enough for her or as good as all the weddings she's been in so now nobody else should be allowed a nice wedding. It's like she wants to say she's better than everybody in the world because she's so unmaterialistic except she just proved she's exactly as materialistic. Who spends 15000$ on a dinner with no dj AND NO CAKE?!?!? But she gets herself a wedding dress to sit in -.- . Who married her lol

[–]masturbateawy 3 points3 points3 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That must have been one impressive venue and dinner to garner $15,000

[–]MegMartinson2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

$15000 div 125 == $120. Dinner with open bar.

Seems about right to me.

I think you just pointed out the exact problem with modern women who say they don't want to get married but inside they do. I am having a hard time understanding why women are this way, as dana said above "is there no thought so unseemly in its bad character that a woman will NOT set to paper?"

I think women believe marriage is the end goal precisely because it has been marketed to them as the end goal to a relationship during their entire lives. Through romantic comedies, disney movies, television shows, commercial advertisements, their own families and friends. It's so engrained into our culture that marriage is the politically and socially expedient thing to do so they desire it regardless what they really feel about it.

[–]semiredpill1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My wedding probably won't have a cake (cupcakes though- but I hate the taste of wedding cake, lol) and we're trying to save money so we're also cutting a professional DJ (a mixed tape will do, honestly). It's still going to be a "nice" wedding because we plan to have great food/drink, beautiful venue and yes, I'm planning that awesome dress. But I don't think it would be as fun if we did this a whole year later! That just sounds odd.

[–]smug_smiling_sam4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Do people actually get married for just the ceremony? I'm going to assume that percentage is less than 5%.

This woman is just writing for shock value it would seem.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm pretty sure most of the women I've met marrying young are just in it to feel like even more of a fucking princess on their day. they marry the first chump who says boo and it ends up not working out because she didn't are enough to wait so they could get to know each other to see if they were compatible.

[–]semiredpill-2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Marrying too young is certainly not a good idea (at least most of the time). I knew a girl who married at 19, but she wasn't the girly type, more rebellious I guess. Divorced one year later. It was almost a prank.

[–]ddrluna2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I was wondering that myself. People like to comment all the time about how people who plan a wedding are focused on planning a party instead of a life together. Now, don't get me wrong, some of them may very well be. But most of them don't plan the ceremony just for the party alone. Most of them don't expect their relationships to end. Some of them are more prepared than others, and others are perhaps more optimistic than they ought to be, but what does it matter? If they want to spend the money to celebrate something they feel is a major milestone in their life, I don't see why that needs to be looked down upon.

My fiance has been married once before me. He and his ex-wife had a small, four person ceremony just like the author of that piece of writing did. Within two years, he caught her in bed with another man.

The ceremony has no bearing on the success of the relationship. That's all up to the people.

[–]semiredpill1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep, I'm excited for my wedding but it's not because that's ALL I care about! Sure, I'm a girly girl and I like picking out dresses, but I dated this man for 5 years before he proposed...what is the likelihood that those 5 years only happened for me to plan a wedding? haha

[–]LifterofThings1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Watch some of the wedding shows. I think you'll find it depressing how many women seem all about the "BUT I WANT TO BE PRINCESS FOR A DAY!" at the expense of their fiance's comfort/wellbeing.

[–]cardigansandcookies3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

She has some valid points, or at least ones I agree with. I don't think any teenager who is doing so to get on TV should get pregnant.

She advocates for being with the man who will be there to assist you in raising your child; I think that's fair enough.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I completely agree, many weddings are getting way out of hand now, from the cost perspective its ridiculous.

However, other points she raises show her true colors, and they certainly don't align with RPW! So close, yet so far away!

[–]secularist422 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

She bangs around close to the real issue but can't quite get there. Her line about "finding the right mate" shows that she still doesn't understand why her shallow and entitled princess friends have mostly divorced...and let's guess to the % of those initiated by those same princesses.

[–]LifterofThings2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I dunno, I figure finding the right mate could alleviate this issue. The trick is "the right mate" is the guy who'll put his foot down when she's being an asshole, not the one who "treats her like a princess".

[–]secularist421 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, but I don't think she meant it like we mean it...as in mate selection.

[–]sugarcrushEndorsed Contributor2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yup because clearly the only choices are no wedding or spending $15,000 on being "queen for the day". Nobody is capable of planning a fun, reasonably priced, beautiful wedding while still caring about their marriage. Thanks for clearing that up huffpo.

Unrelated but she seems unreasonably jealous baby showers. If you want one so bad then have a baby, but don't shit all over everyone else for being excited. Or throw your own self a graduation party. But more importantly, GET OVER IT.

[–]semiredpill2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I totally agree. I just got engaged and I want a small wedding that is sentimental but not over-the-top. My parents are paying for it anyway, but I'd rather spend that money on our future together. So I just want to have the wedding at my mom's house, we're not inviting tons of random acquaintances, we're not having a professional DJ or a cake (I'll make cupcakes or something) and we'll just have an open bar so people can have fun.

[–]sugarcrushEndorsed Contributor2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Open bar is the only necessary part for a good wedding in my opinion ;)

We did a destination wedding and it was so easy and fun (and actually pretty cheap!). I definitely recommend going that route as well to any ladies thinking of getting married, if you don't want to have it at home. Plus you get to start the honeymoon early!

[–]semiredpill1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ah- well I want to have it at my mom's house (again saving $$!) but yeah, destination weddings are lovely.

[–]Lady_Motido 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe she's pissed because of the weird rule that you shouldn't invite anyone to your baby shower that wasn't invited to your wedding, that would mean she wouldn't get many prezzies.

[–]semiredpill1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm obviously biased since I just got engaged, but the author sounds bitter with a capital B. I also felt this way before I got engaged, and I do think that plenty of women get married too soon, to the wrong men (or they're the wrong woman themselves) just for the wedding. But the vast majority of people who get married aren't doing it for a wedding. I'm obviously very excited about my wedding but I'm most excited about being my fiance's wife. Being together for 5 years before engagement helps.

Vegas Baby!

[–]MrsStrom1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have a love/hate relationship with HuffPo.

This chick needs to get her head on straight. Where was she when 7 of these brides she stood up for went hamster on their husbands? Why can't she just be happy for her friends?

Seriously, journalism has taken a huge hit in credibility now that column space is effectively free. Just print whatever selfish, mean-spirited thoughts you have and call it a human interest piece. And it sounds like the author needs to get laid.

[–]2FAM0US-1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

how about everybody just stay in college their whole life. problem solved!
