Are people really expected to form solid romantic relationships in the modern sexual market place?

We're more insecure because we have fewer people we can depend on, in the aggregate, than ever before.

More of us move to new cities to work far from old friends and extended family. We're more isolated than ever before. We keep in touch with the people we think we can count on primarily through symbols dispatched through the ether.

We're more insecure interpersonally because we're, literally, less secure than we've ever been in that regard.

[–]washington_breadstixM'gtow10 points11 points12 points 7 years ago (27 children) | Copy Link

As a male, I do think that men are becoming more insecure. I can't really speak for women but I can't imagine that the increase in insecurity is as severe among them as it is for men. There is seemingly an abundance of guys in their mid-20s who are exceedingly nervous around women and/or too nervous to even approach a woman. I can't conceive of anyone I know from my dad's generation (he grew up in the 60s) being too scared to even approach. There are absolutely guys that age who have been putting women on pedestals their whole lives, but it somehow doesn't seem to affect them in such a major way or turn them into trembling, stammering weenies around women.

I think that a huge unspoken reason for this is that pretty much any guy who hit puberty post-Y2K has had access to high-speed, hardcore porn since the first day he started masturbating. Indulging in that shit during your formative years has some effects that are hard to shake, and I truly believe these include negative effects on a guy's social skills and confidence around women.

I won't elaborate too much in this comment since I'm kinda getting on a soapbox here, but I've got my reasons. I've thought about making a post about them for a while but I can't really think of what exactly I'd want the crux of the debate to be.

Guy who gets nervous around women here, wasn't always that way. But after meeting ladies who shit talk on every ex they had, falsely accuse men of crimes that weren't committed, smile in your face and stab you in the back, I don't exactly have that feeling of wonder around them. Just extreme caution

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Subscribe. I also wasn't always that way.
But in-between being sexually abused, bullied, physically abused by older female relatives, seeing the way women treated men who used personals catalogs in the 90s, etc.

Let's just say it fucking took its toll.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

What makes you think these men are insecure more than simply lack social skills and metoo being a wrecking ball in terms of relations between men and women?

[–]ImJuliusPepperwood 1 points1 points1 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I think me too has little to nothing to do with men approaching women. Its 100% lack of social skills.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

That doesn't mean metoo didn't make an impact on dating though. As its now deemed sexual harassment to ask a woman out for drinks.

[–]ImJuliusPepperwood 1 points1 points1 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It is not and it never implied that. Metoo isn’t boogeyman you make it out to be.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Yes it is, multiple European countries are passing laws where a woman can flag down a cop on the street and get a man at the very least fined for asking her out if she feels "threatened".

I used the quotes because the law is purposefully vague.

[–]ImJuliusPepperwood 1 points1 points1 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Link to said law? The actual wording?

Yawn.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

https://www.rt.com/news/417060-france-men-harassment-fine/

Yawn. Have fun reading.

[–]ImJuliusPepperwood 1 points1 points1 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I refuse open a link from RT. Link to the actual European law, on the website of said European country.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Link to a picture of the printed law on paper with the stamp and the signatory legal body in full view, pls.

If you'd read the article it links third parties. Since you clearly don't give a fuck why would I?

A similar law was also passed in my country by a female politician in a corruption scandal to deter reporters from "harassing" her, since most reporters were male.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Kinda hard to make it a boogeyman when street harassment is a criminal offence.

[–]ImJuliusPepperwood 1 points1 points1 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Catcalling and such is a shady act, and while it shouldn’t be criminal, you should be ostracized for it.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How is it even remotely shady? Let alone be ostracized for it? If you going to do that to men, then I guess women should be ostracized for wanting men to bow to their every need and wants.

[–]analt223No Pill1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Its because there really isnt a place for men (based on maleness) anymore. The workforce is not really based on manual labor, so women can generally compete and be just as successful there. Yet women are still the ones who are also biologically relevant too, since they are the limiting factor to reproduction.

Women want to be a stay at home mom? Men will still find you sexy, and the path to that lifestyle exists. Women want to be a career woman? Men will still find you sexy, and the gov't will help you get that all these 50/50 ratios that we supposedly need.

Men still just get to work, and you better be good at it. Because they'd rather have an average woman doing your job than an average man.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

The workforce is not really based on manual labor, so women can generally compete and be just as successful there.

And that's bad why? The rest of what you said by and large sounds like a conspiracy.

[–]analt223No Pill0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

never said it was bad, although i do think some manual labor is necessary for each country's economy to be healthy. I said that its not a path to maleness as it was in the past.

And how the fuck does the rest sound like a conspiracy...wtf?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

And how the fuck does the rest sound like a conspiracy...wtf?

Because its largely made up.

[–]analt223No Pill1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

hardly. A career is significantly more important to a man's happiness than a womans

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

What does that have to do with thinking the government going to make relationships 50/50?

[–]analt223No Pill0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

i never said the government was going to make relationships 50/50. They are trying to legislate away the patriarchy in the economy, and its fucking relationships up because women tend to want to be with men ahead of them in life.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

and the gov't will help you get that all these 50/50 ratios that we supposedly need.

[–]analt223No Pill3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Were more insecure because

1) Social media has caused the most fake aspects of people to become the standard and the most prevalent.

2) Nobody really wants to get rid of gender roles, despite lots of discussion about how "evil" they are.

[–]Pastelitomaracucho2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Narcissism is skyrocketing. So yes. Fragile egos and need for validation abound more than ever.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fragile egos and need for validation abound more than ever.

LOL, for women it's "you go gurl!"

For men it's "man up!"

[–]Mickusey[S] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Solution for an intense need for validation?

[–]Pastelitomaracucho4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Get off social media. Focus on yourself. Avoid drama as much as possible.

[–]sketch1620003 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Everyone is insecure. Men just have to pay for it. I don't think that people are more insecure inherently, it's that in the past no one gave a shit how insecure you were. You were expected to shut up and do your job.

For women, this has changed with the help of feminism. People acknowledge that there are social pressures which a lot of women struggle with, society is taken to task and accommodations are made for the variation on abilities, skills, circumstances and values of every individual woman.

Men are treated the same as always though. No one gives a single shit about how insecure men are. You are expected to perform. If you can't get over yourself and get results you are pretty much just a waste of oxygen as a man.

[–]the_calibre_cat7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (32 children) | Copy Link

Men absolutely are - the standards for them have risen. Women absolutely aren't - the standards for them have lessened.

How it affects relationships? Probably badly, and to be perfectly analytical about that, it reduces the number of them.

Yes, I put most of the blame of this on contemporary feminism/social justice plus internet.

The pursuit of a fifty-fifty relationship really fucked it up. The problem being there is no such thing, so a chick ends up evaluating, as chicks do, to see if he's really pulling half her chores. So she's basically looking for inequality in everything HE does.

I've lived it for ten years. The only way to satiate that mentality is to go so above and beyond that you shut that shit down via shock and awe. At that point you're out doing her, she feels useless and she's got nothing to say about it. Still won't get you laid though.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Your right there's no such thing as a 50/50 relationship as it can never be achieved one side is going to do more than the other. But one woman you been with 10 years doesn't represent all women though. There are women do want to do their share where as there are others wanting you do to more than them.

[–]Five_DecadesKnows what women want. Knows he doesn't have it0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So she's basically looking for inequality in everything HE does.

That reminds me of a couple I know.

He works 80 hours a week, she works 40 hours a week.

But she insists all housework be 50/50. Its pathetic.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Too much work, not enough payoff.

THIS is why a lot of (especially introverted) men give up on dating.

Having tho be "all that and more" and still not have a chance because "all that, more AND hot" guys simply exist out there?

Yeah... fuck that!

[–]donttoleratebullshit0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

What standards for men? I’m surrounded by hot men and seems like it gets harder with time

[–]the_calibre_cat2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well, not to advance an RP talking point but... generally older people are less attractive. I'm facing that too. Supposedly men get better with age.

Yea if they have George Clooney genes. Not if they have "normal person" genes.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fertility in men goes down too. Not as fast as in women, but by 45-50 many men's fertility is similar to that of a 38 yo woman.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Tall, dark, handsome, be college educated, make more than said woman does, etc etc. If you aren't able to get hot men then its one of two things you aren't attractive or least hot or these men have ejected out of society.

[–]DespisedByWomen 1 points1 points1 points 7 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Just your hair though, definitely not your skin color lmao

Ya skin color as well, but not necessary dark skin but certainly not so light your a ghost.

[–]Mickusey[S] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Why do you think men specifically suffer?

[–]Aaren_AugustineWants a Cookie3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There's a giant gap of what women say they want and what women actually reward. Most women expect chivalry or at least domestic competence, but reward toxic masculinity. So you have a lot of men who take women at their word not understanding women communicate indirectly and will curtail what they say to who they are saying it to.

From a dudes perspective, most women are expecting men to be competent men and competent women. Alternatively, the women that have become competent men aren't wanted because men don't want women that are dudes.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Alternatively, the women that have become competent men aren't wanted because men don't want women that are dudes.

There's always a dude. Problem is, most women don't want the dude who wants them.

And, yeah, a guy with options will exercise his options.

Any single man, given the choice between a woman he likes and one he doesn't will choose accordingly.

[–]the_calibre_cat1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I think men need women more than women need men, personally.

[–]Mickusey[S] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Can you elaborate on that a little bit? What makes you believe this and how do you specifically define “need”?

[–]the_calibre_cat6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I think men are biologically configured to experience significant psychological incentives when they are or aren't successful with women. If we aren't, our mind torments us. If we are, our mind bro fist bumps us. I don't think women are nearly this driven to maximize their reproductive success, simply because they expend much more time and resources in rearing young.

As a result, men are super thirsty, mostly expendable DNA supply machines whose free will may well be capable of being overridden by our baser desires to reproduce (a terrifying thought)... while women have this absurd cosmic duty and incredible (also terrifying) power over our conscious, rational minds.

Long story short, if 75% of the women on the planet just disappeared, an absolute fuckload of men would probably die in the subsequent competition for reproductive success. Men would become de jure second or maybe even third class citizens, and there'd be wars, if not an epidemic of crime.

If 75% of men disappeared, women would be fine and the men would be in Paradise.

I am not optimistic about my gender, I guess you could say.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

If 75% of men disappeared, women would be fine

LOL sure buddy. Women would start working all the nasty jobs that are 90%+ occupied by men.

And they do it fast enough for society not to significantly degrade, sure.

[–]the_calibre_cat0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I mean, I didn't say there wouldn't be consequences, but uhh... yeah, it's not too much of a stretch for me to think that in such a crisis, women would step up and be garbagepeople and what-have-you. Economic incentives don't just work on men.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They had to in WW2 but wouldn't it be better if we averted that level of crisis?

[–]the_calibre_cat0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah. It's a thought experiment.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Yes, I put most of the blame of this on contemporary feminism/social justice plus internet.

TBH only part of the blame is on this. Young girls are flooded with images of hot young guys singing about love as early as 10-11.

Plus all the Disney shows for girls that help entrench stereotypes (e.g.: the nerdy guy who's a great friend but not BF material).

Plus the fairytale movies where the guy is either a hot prince, or a hot roguish type.

[–]the_calibre_cat0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

TBH only part of the blame is on this. Young girls are flooded with images of hot young guys singing about love as early as 10-11.

  1. I don't think that's precisely new

  2. I think most of the people producing that content are... kind of... part of the feminist/social justice establishment. You think Justin Bieber wasn't towing the S.J.W. line as he was performing?

Plus all the Disney shows for girls that help entrench stereotypes (e.g.: the nerdy guy who's a great friend but not BF material).

There is actually some empirical evidence for this. I will try to find it.

Plus the fairytale movies where the guy is either a hot prince, or a hot roguish type.

Again, though, I guarantee most of the people involved in making these were pretty deeply members of that social movement... and also, escapism seldom features ugly people. Nobody escapes to the brutal reality of their actual flaws, so I'ma little hard pressed to blame this.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Boybands (the way we know them) weren't really a ting until the 90s, with some exceptions of men younger than 20 singing as a group going as far back as maybe the 40s.

Beatles were a thing in the 60s but it's not like they were aimed specifically at preteens, unlike boybands.

And I saw the effects of boybands first hand across 3 generations as guys started frosting their tips or bleaching their hair, using hair gel and taking fashion cues from how The Backstreet Boys were dressed.

[–]Freethetreees0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Women have always wanted hot guys. That’s not new.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, except before all this, standards were more localized. Having to compete with local Chad vs all the Chads over 100 miles.

[–]Freethetreees0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yes, technology makes the world smaller and our lives easier and better. Now women don’t have to settle for men they’re not attracted to, just because those were the only men around.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No instead they can get pumped and dumped by the men they are attracted to in their 20s then get a bunch of cats and complain that all the (good looking) good men are avoiding'em in their 30s.

[–]Freethetreees0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Still better than being stuck with a guy you settled for

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If that's your outlook, fine.

Meanwhile I have it on good authority (an acquaintance who's a psychologist) that women who "settle" for a husband do learn to love him in time even if they aren't attracted to his looks.

But that was back when women were OK with giving an unattractive guy a shot and letting him talk to her for more than 5 seconds.

But hey, if looks are such a deal-breaker that you'd prefer to be a "cat mommy" or a "dog mommy" than be married to a slightly huskier looking man who loves you...
Heck, a lot of women think like this nowadays so you're not alone in that regard, at least.

[–]Freethetreees1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Would you want to spend the rest of your life with someone you’re not attracted to? Then why should women?

[–]Five_DecadesKnows what women want. Knows he doesn't have it0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men absolutely are - the standards for them have risen. Women absolutely aren't - the standards for them have lessened.

Yup this.

In the modern era men have to be tall, good looking, with good educations, good careers and good personalities just to be good enough to date out of shape single mothers with debt.

It makes men feel very insecure, and women feel very demanding. But it is destroying long term relationships.

[–]_Neon_Shadow_0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men's beauty standards are higher than they ever have been before. Women's beauty standards are lower than they ever have been. So yeah, the result is obvious.

[–]Raikichu2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

That doesn't make sense. Men in the past only needed to have a job while women just had to be pretty. Men today need more than just a job, and women don't need to be pretty to survive. Women today are fat on average and still date. So you seem to have gotten that backwards

[–]jax006Red Pill Gives You Wings2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I interpreted it that way - men have to be hot these days while women just have to be "there"

I think he meant standards in the sense of standards to live up to"

[–]Raikichu0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That makes more sense.

[–]Freethetreees0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

As nature intended :) Males are meant to be the beautiful ones competing for mates and fighting with their genes. May the fittest genes win! It’s not a dystopia, it’s nature’s glory.

[–]jax006Red Pill Gives You Wings1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

If by "beautiful ones competing for mates" you mean "most physically powerful ones competing for who gets to rape the cavewomen" then yes, that's what nature intended.

[–]Freethetreees1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Incorrect. If our primary mode of reproduction were rape, we’d have gonads like ducks. Women are meant to select while men compete for their attention, and it’s beneficial to the whole species in the end. The only ones upset about this natural state of affairs are genetically unfit male individuals who cannot compete.

[–]jax006Red Pill Gives You Wings0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Women are meant to select while men compete for their attention

Yes, and the way we visualize "select" "compete" and "attention" in this statement is vastly out of context given how far we've come from our natural caveman days.

Rape was FOR SURE a common mode of reproduction. Until not that long ago tbh. The Latino ethnicity is a result of europeans raping natives.

[–]Freethetreees0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Rape wasn’t the PRIMARY mode of reproduction for most of human evolutionary history, tournament style sexual selection and serial monogamy was. Obviously rape happened, but not often enough to force the females of our species to evolve a physical adaptation in defense, like in other animals which reproduce primarily through rape.

tournament style sexual selection and serial monogamy was.

This set of behavior is not exclusive from men raping women. What do you honestly think "monogomy" was like in cavemen days, lmao

Those claims are contradicted by data collected from modern dating sites/apps. Overwhelmingly women judge men much more harshly than the other way around.

Sorry that's what i meant. The minimum standard men must attain is higher than it ever has been. The worst thing is about 80% of it comes down to pure genetic lottery.

I just don’t think I can find contentment in a world where all fundamental expectations about human relationships are completely lopsided.

Same. Throughout my mid twenties I went through an obscene amount of dates and sex. Now I'm just jaded by the whole thing. Women and the entire dating culture just make me sick.

The entire reason for our biological drive to continue to exist also causes us psychological torture, an interesting predicament. It’s pretty dystopian when considering it

That data doesn't contradicted that. All you have to do is look at mainstream media to see this.

I think that's just because everyone is fat as hell now

This is staggering bullshit.

Men are more insecure than ever. I am 30 year old and have 27 year old male friends who are virgins and who have never approached a girl. For context, my friends are in IT and they are not total autists, but become such when around women. On the other hand, I don't know a single 22+ year old girl who has not had a boyfriend.

And how many girls do you know who would give one of those guys a shot if he got the courage to ask her out?

Please note that I'm not saying his personality did a 180. He's still a soft spoken, polite dude, but has the courage to talk to and ask out women.

Jesus. How do you get to 27 and never have sex? They know escorts are a thing, right?

I think everyone, society at large, is becoming more and more insecure; and this is due to the messages that we find all around us: politicians, educators, and marketing. All those messages foster and leverage insecurities on the masses.
