I was talking about the movie "When Harry Met Sally" the other day, and while I love the film, the famous scene where the leads argue about whether or not men and women can be friends has always bothered me. Can men and women be friends? I'd say sure. But what if, as the movie posits, "the sex thing gets in the way"?

My argument would be...so what? Why can't you have a friend you'd want to have sex with? I've had male friends I was attracted to who didn't want me back, I've been the object of unreciprocated desire from male friends, and even (and this is the advanced class) had a mutual attraction with a friend where we hooked up and were friends (I stupidly thought this was the dynamic FWBs traditionally have). I've also had at least one male friend where we simply did not find each other attractive, like, at all. (There's also the question of non-straight people. Bisexuals manage to have friends, even though they can theoretically be into anyone)

In fact, going back to the film, I'd argue that Harry and Sally had an awesome friendship, even though it was established early on that Harry would happily bang Sally. The whole reason they fell in love was because they were friends, and I've always thought it was one of the best portrayals of a relationship I've ever seen in a movie.

But this is PPD, and this sub has always been surprisingly silent on the subject of friendship and its place in romantic relationships or even gender dynamics in general. So, what do you guys think? Can men and women be friends? And does it make a difference if you're attracted to your friends, or can that be part of a friendship?
