There might be a difference, sure. There's a good book called What Money Can't Buy by a Harvard philosophy professor (here it is). He gives the example of some friends who came over for a gathering at his house. Afterward, they sent him a thank you card. In the card was a $20 bill. He felt insulted. Why? Because they took something that was about more than just money, and made it about money.
