Masculinity is all set of behaviours that are prerequisite for a male to attract females and that optimize their reproductivity.

For example, expecting the world to change because of your personal incapacity to bear day to day micro aggression is feminine.

It doesn't mean women won't show masculine behaviours, it means women don't need these behaviours to attract men.

I think that masculinity is the essence of relying on yourself first and foremost. Seeing a goal in front of you, and trying to do what needs to be done independently before turning to others...Not because you're harboring a superiority complex, but simply because you're confident it can be done without outside assistance. Of course, if you're unable to, it means you'll accept that truth and work with a select few others to accomplish it.

Least, that's how I define my masculinity and the masculinity of those around me.

It depends on the historical and cultural context therefore it doesn't make sense to talk about masculine as a singular entity.

There are multiple masculinities. So for example a blue collar and a white collar workers have different definitions, just like a hipster and a metalhead or an Indian and an Albanian will have different definitions as well.

It can mean anything from being a selfish, stoic, aggressive brute to being a hardworking, vigorous family man.

But there are a few traits that commonly were associated with being masculine:

negative

Loud, arrogant, brutish, aggressive, irresponsible, stubborn, selfish, cruel, blunt, not nurturing,...

positive

Active, athletic, self-reliant, decisive, dominant, commanding, robust, strong, proud, vigorous, logical, analytical,...

But most of these traits no longer make sense to be gendered in a modern context. Men can be compassionate, co-operative, faithful, gentle, intuitive, kind, perceptive, tactful, responsible, humane, benevolent, nurturing and vulnerable as well even though those traits were traditionally associated with being feminine.

Due to our patriarchal history women were forced into submissive, timid, nurturing and quiet gender roles, but nowadays due to less stricter and less restrictive gender roles they've got more individual freedom and therefore it became apparent that they aren't that much different than men.

So therefore a lot of typically feminine or masculine traits are now considered to be neutral and it's no longer as important to be gender conforming.

Masculinity in a philosophical sense is a form of proactiveness, self reliance, independence, freedom.

At the most basic level it is testosterone driven behavior --> dominance, violence, confrontation

We've talked a lot about this but one of the best books on it is "The Way of the Superior Man" by David Deida.

It's even appropriate for you postmodernist types in that it talks about masculine and feminine polarity without necessarily even assigning it to men or women, but whoever resonates with that.

A lot of the answers here are very good descriptions of masculinity. One thing I want to emphasize is the "risk-taking" characteristic. I believe that is one of the pillars that defines masculinity.

I think this is one of those evolutionary beauties we sometimes talk about here on PPD.

In my uneducated opinion, risk taking is a masculine trait while risk assessment is a feminine trait. Why? Think back in the cavemen days. Men, as hunters have to learn to take risks or else there's no dinner. Fast forward to today, men have to take risks to ask a girl out if he is interested in her. So you are seeing the idea that "a man must learn to take risks in order to get what he wants" is prevalent in almost all facets of his interactions with the world.

To offer my anecdotal evidences, I know quite a few guys at work. Some very masculine, some less and some more feminine. The very masculine guys all enjoy activities that involve a moderate amount of risks. Like rock climbing, surfing, martial arts, experimenting and tinkering with devices. While a lot of the more feminine men would never consider those activities and they are more content with activities with less risks involved.
