Driving, I suppose. It's a big responsibility, and it's pretty daunting at first. Getting your licence is a literal test as well. It's one thing everyone expects you do at a certain age, and then your licence becomes your go to as ID and age verification. It's not really a gender specific response though. There's some symbolic value that can be read into it.

My cousin (second cousin? He is my cousin's child) is having his bar mitzvah this coming winter. He technically becomes a man at that time. I think that is pretty cool.

I agree for women it's puberty or when we start looking like a woman.

Even we don't want it, we're suddenly hip to how lascivious and oftentimes gross men can be when trying to sexually approach you. Even if you don't consider it a rite, it's definitely a "teaching moment" for many young women.

Menses- it's annoying as hell. It hurts for me personally. You gotta buy shit once a month to mitigate it. It just comes with a lot of responsibility ... chance of pregnancy being one of them. So yes it's def a rite even if every chick her claims it isn't.

Women's rites tend to be naturally embedded.

Which is why male rites tend to be so overtly performed. They're making it up as they go. That said I think it's helpful for a lot of men.

I can't think of any inherent "rites of passage" for either sex. My first blood was when I was 10...that is hardly an indicator of "womanhood", since I was still a kid. I didn't even fucking want it, nor did I want my hips/tits that started growing in when I was 11. It was like my body was deliberately betraying my gender.

I moved out when I was 17 because I couldn't stand being at home anymore. I graduated college at 21, started my career in the hobby industry at 19, had my first PiV sex when I was almost 23...I don't know. They're all just aspects of life, nothing worth marking on the calendar.

I think the closest thing I could think of would be when I was 25 and finally felt comfortable enough to begin dressing as I wanted and made my waist length hair a pixie cut.

Honestly, I think it would be amazing if society did have some kind of rite of passage for boys and girls. It'd bring us closer together, to have a common rite that everyone can mark as the beginning of their adulthood.

I'm 27 and I never had any moment where I started feeling like an adult. All the traditional rites of passage came and went - getting your period, first bra, wearing adult clothes, wearing makeup, first kiss, driving, losing virginity, moving out, graduating from college, first job, first apartment...

I guess the closest thing that felt like a rite of passage was marriage, but it still didn't make me feel like an adult... I just feel like a kid that happens to be married, making things up as I go along.

I look around at the "mature, responsible" adults in my life and they all seem boring and unhappy, bogged down by obligations. And the worst part is they're complacent in all of it. TBH I hope I never start feeling like an adult, it seems like such a drag.

I would say that drinking, driving, and graduating school are some modern rites of passage. Some earlier ones are shaving, using deodorant and getting a library card. You could also fit credit cards in there somehow.

I did Boy Scouts. The organization by design is very trail-y, and the whole "we take boys and turn them into men," deal. I personally didn't care too much about all of that, and slid by with my Eagle just a week before my 18th birthday (which is the deadline for Eagle).

I know they also had a deeper rite of passage with the Order of the Arrow shit, but I was just like, "fuck that noise."

That said, the camping skills I learned are very useful, just this weekend I was the dedicated Fire-Master at a party. B-)

Didn't do shit to turn me into a man however, lol.

There is no rite of passage for men, and if there was feminists would go ape shit just to get women doing the same which would defeat the entire purpose of having a rite of passage for men to begin with.

Women have their first period and childbirth I suppose.

In this day and age, what point is there in rites of passage? Children are taught (or are supposed to be taught) the skills hey need to succeed. How one goes about it afterward varies. As long as a young adult has proper responsibilities, a singular rite is hardly necessary. It's just a hold over to fading traditions.
