It's the illusion of control.

We really are not in control of very much. Think about driving. You can control how fast you go and how you steer, but you have no control over other drivers. Those lane lines are not magical. The only thing that keeps someone from crossing a double yellow line from opposing traffic into your lane is the other driver's choice (that, or a concrete barrier).

Think about reputation. You can control your own behavior, but you cannot control what others will think of you.

Think about health. You can control factors like exercise and nutrition, but you cannot control the outcome. If you have a pernicious type of cancer or virus lurking around in there, you cannot control that.

Think about family and friends. You cannot keep them away from death. Ultimately, you or they will die first, and you will feel the pangs of separation. This is out of your control.

If you recognize that there are things that out of your control and that those externals (as Epictetus calls them), then you can start focusing solely on things within your control. I suck pretty much at accomplishing this in reality, but I use this (Stoicism, especially Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius) as my guide to detangling despair.

I wouldn’t go anywhere near if I could help it; if I had to be around because she was a colleague or my boss or similar, I would do my best to placate her if possible, if not I would seriously start looking for another job if I felt I couldn’t get a decent hearing from the organisation.

She needs therapy of some kind, but she’ll be very unlikely to get it because she’s handing over control to someone else.

The only person who would be likely to snap her out of this would be someone extremely dominant who would just never give her a moment to over think things until she crosses the border into Crazyville.

But what would he get out of that? The only guy that dominant who would devote time to this kind of women would be one that would probably fuck around a lot - which when she finds out (and she will) will throw her straight back into control-freak mode so that she can never be fucked around again.

People in general will let you down more often then not. Not being able to accept this and make allowances for it shows insecurity and immaturity. I would generally stay away from someone like this, man or woman.

Look, I'm sorry that everyone you ever met before today was completely incompetent. Maybe it's better for you personally that you captain your own ship. Maybe you'll never personally be able to trust another person enough to allow him/her/it/them to be the captain. IF so, that's sad. But some people are that way. Some people just have to micromanage everything. If that's you, then perhaps being a first mate isn't for you.

That does NOT, however, invalidate the C/FM model in any way, shape, manner or form.

a hopelessly neurotic woman like this needs the most relaxed, competent, and alpha of men to fuck her every day and twice on the weekends to finally settle down. Otherwise, her mind is so full of worry and chatter that her stress level will be bad for her health. She is likely on several medications and drinks a lot of wine to wash them down.

She is like the dominatrix who is secretly a closet masochist, and is begging to be tied down and relinquish all control, because she is so unsatisfied with her current situation that this is truly what her heart desires.

I'd tell a woman like that just to accept that many people are going to screw up your life no matter what you try to learn or do to prevent it from happening, but that many people are also going to help you if you let them, and to trust your own ability to fix things when the people who screw up your life do so.

If you get in the way of my goals (large and minor) way too much, I'll just tell you to fuck off. If you're a girlfriend, I'd dump you; if you were a friend, I'd drop you.

The whole feeling you'd need to have more control than you should over things, especially myself, would be incredibly off-putting.

It helps that there are other friends who wouldn't be so controlling or other relationship prospects who wouldn't be either.

Depends how those feelings of yours manifest externally. There's a ton we don't know about strangers' internal lives, and those inner lives are irrelevant to me.

I'd treat you just like I'd treat any other stranger. If you turn out to be annoying, bitchy, or problematic, I just won't associate with you anymore.

I couldn't date someone with that sort of Type A personality, though.
