Thought experiment. Of course it will sound convoluted, but try and answer the question directly, and not nitpick on the made-up details/framework. (ie: in physics problems, you don't question the possibility of a "frictionless" surface instead of answering the question)

  • Pretend you are married to your husband of 5 years

  • You make 150k and he makes 40k. Is a great marriage.

  • You guys decide you want to adopt. The paperwork is started and approved. The finalizing steps for the adoption process will take 6 more months.

  • Due to some circumstance, you guys break up and divorce. You are still on friendly terms.

  • It is still possible to stop the adoption process. You wish to.

  • Your husband does not, and plans to let the adoption go through. You will still be considered the future parent of this child. [I know this part is convoluted, just work with me here]

  • You do not plan on being active in the child's life, and he will likely have full custody.

  • Would you be willing to pay child support for this adopted child? Would you think it is fair to?

EDIT: Despite me saying it already, please have parent threads directly address the question instead of debating the premise to side-step answering or bringing up other scenarios unrelated to this.
