Halfchan went to shit. The extensive mod leaks just proved it.

The system of anonymity is great. The culture of hostility? Yes please. On the other hand, the board structure is not ideal for sharing swathes of text and things 404 quickly.

I'm undecided on the merits of comment trees vs linear comments. Each has its upsides.

As for /pol/; they're too fringe for my tastes. They take alright ideas and spin them to be ridiculous.

It may sound weird, considering my flair, but at some level I like their rampantly anti-PC assholery. I mean, not like like, but like the part that they are honest about what they feel. The issue is, a lot of people are assholes but they usually cover it up to avoid repercussions. Thus you could get backstabbed, you think some is lamb, but there is actually a wolf inside. 4chan is 100% open about them being assholes and at some level it is reassuring. No backstab possibility. They are the kind of people who consider you a disgusting fat pig, for example, they will tell it at the first sight. "PC" people are sometimes more like, be very friendly with everybody but snicker behind their backs and that could be far worse.

I prefer the lack of votes and identities as it allows people to discuss things without having to censor themselves but it also attracts trolling which distracts from having decent discussions.

I think 4chan is a fairly reliable place to find some hentai when one wants to find some hentai. It's my go-to before danbooru or paheal. IDK I don't really use it for anything else most of the time.

Honestly can't stand that place, the racism is palpable which wouldn't suck so much except that the retards there claiming to be "master race" are pretty much white versions of the useless assholes they hate.... to not use another word. You want people with the right ideas to build a nation, probably /k/.

Contrary to popular belief... /pol/ is not always right, they just have photographic memories of all the times they are.

But I will give them this... they are excellent source finders on current news and I often visit them during times of crisis to find in one hour what would take at least 12 browsing the news sites. Just visit a thread and that shit is a live feed.

Used to love 4chan circa 06-09, but left after discovering reddit. Always loved their fanatically anti PC, brutally honest way of discussing everything. Always hated their pedo shit. I will never forget the time I opened a "Captain Picard" thread at 3 am... scarred for life.

I find it funny how much of internet humor starts on 4chan. The very concept of the internet meme was essentially born there. Then they are popularized by reddit, eventually make it to Facebook at which point the OG's retire them, then finally to 9 gag and sometimes Hot Topic ---> Goodwill.

I'm not really up to date on 4chan though really, this was my experience 10 years ago, somewhere along the way it grew a more pack mentality and started taking stuff (including themselves) seriously. Which is just weird.

It cuts all ways.

In theory there exists better content aggregation platforms like tumblr, which will let you filter what you want versus what you don't to an ultra-fine sheen, where as 4chan is strictly anonymous, and pretty much democratized everything to the point that everything's unremarkable slag.

And this works if that's what you're looking for. The internet works best with no filter. But 4chan actually does have filters- and not just for strictly illegal content either.

The other issue is that people are often horrible at spotting the trolls. They have no idea that /pol/ is often just a joke. They don't get that /v/ will complain about anything. They don't get that the best- only- way of dealing with a troll is to not engage with one.

I don't really go there anymore but I can't discount the value of a website like 4chan.

Years ago I brwosed it regularly for /random vulgar fun, weird porn, useful links and creepy stories. It was good in it's own twisted way, relevant. A ritual of passage for any growing up net user; one doesn't know internet the unless you've lurked on the ugly side, it is the place to learn how to handle trolling, harrassment, obscenity and anonymity. Nowdays I feel I've grown out of it, but still occasionally visit to witness the spirit. The uncencored sewer, darkly beautiful in it's rawness. It is important it exist; for age of internet a face of something genuine, anarchy, punk, rebellion, not giving a shit and being provocative for the fuck of it. May it bloom, as rarely heard tones of greater narratives, weak signals and moments of ingenuinity occasionally glimmer among all the shit.

On /pol/, I don't have particular opinion. Heard it's a trolly place.

For every 100,000 retarded posts involving boobs, shit, gay sex and/or people getting destroyed, there is one great idea. I used to go on 4chan when I was in high school. I don't go there anymore. I got all growed up and went to (snicker) more mature (snicker) websites.
