Grace Gelder even 'proposed' to herself on a park bench and staged a full wedding ceremony with 50 guests.

The photographer said that after being single for six years she had built up a brilliant relationship with herself - and creating that bond with someone else seemed like too much hard work.

A 36-year-old North Dakota woman who married herself in a commitment ceremony last March has now spoken about her self-marriage choice in an interview with Anderson Cooper.

The marriage took place among friends and family who were encouraged to "blow kisses to the world" after she exchanged rings with her "inner groom", My Fox Phoenix reports.

"I feel very empowered, very happy, very joyous ... I want to share that with people, and also the people that were in attendance, it's a form of accountability," Nadien Schweigert told Anderson Cooper.

The BBC and other outlets reported that Cerca Travel’s two-day “solo wedding” package included choosing your own special gown, bouquet and hairstyle, a limousine service, a stay at a hotel and a commemorative photo album.

These (roughly) $2,500 ceremonies are supposedly about encouraging “positive feelings” on the part of the single brides. It seems more like a makeover though, because there’s an option of renting a “decorative” man, aged between 20 and 70 to pose alongside you if you so wish. A fake groom for your big day: magic!

I was searching for something to write about, and I started thinking about how weird it is that people I knew as single girls are now married ladies who own things like homes and cars. Like, one of my best friends is a housewife and mother of two out in the Midwest. Another one of my best friends is married with a gorgeous house and a pool house (can you imagine?).

I just went to a bridal shower the other week for a gal I grew up with, and she's four years my junior (I'm 31). It trips me out because, well, weren't we just playing with American Girl dolls the other day? When did this whole growing-up thing happen? And it makes me feel a little sad and left behind, in a very Bridesmaids kind of way, that I haven't found that kind of commitment-inducing love yet. I certainly want it. What am I doing wrong?

It is entirely women who are engaging in this, judging by the articles I read through.

A few thoughts come to mind ...

This supports the RP theory that marriage is really about the ceremony and the self-validation for women, with the man simply serving as a decoration. Whereas, for men, the ceremony and the social celebration is okay at best, a total drag at worst, and the focus is really on the partner you're committing to.

This supports the RP theory that hypergamy + women's rise in terms of income and social power = many women who are completely dissatisfied by the non-Alpha offerings that are on the table in terms of single men (who are accessible), who choose to opt out and just marry themselves rather than settle. They've priced themselves out of the market, so to speak.

Thoughts? Do you see this trend growing and possibly going mainstream?
