When me and my husband first got together I point blank told him not to propose. I don't want to be traditionally "married" as in, I don't want a wedding. I'm not a egotistical b*tch with a princess complex who needs to be paraded around in a fancy dress I'll only wear once. I don't need a worthless rock on my finger that costs three or more months rent. I hate weddings. They're expensive, and pretty pointless if you've already had sex with your partner, and have been together for a while. (For the record I did make him wait to have sex, until he proved he wanted commitment) I know it's too late, but I'm now wondering if this was a mistake. Did I set myself up as a low status woman by doing this? Did I send the message to not bother, because I'm not worth the fuss? Or did I earn myself more points by being practical, and non- materialistic? The latter was my intention. I didn't feel the need to pressure him, or go through some ritual about it. I thought he would appreciate it. (And to be honest, I also did this to protect my own feelings in case it never happened.) I know I'll technically be his girlfriend forever now, but he's given me no reason to suspect that he's anything less than dedicated to our relationship. Did having no expectations for him to make the ultimate gesture of love and commitment perhaps cause him to subconsciously see me as less valuable?
